Harvard SCEA Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

@nsliyromanov It doesn’t show up in mine even though I know my school submitted it online through Naviance—it just shows Teacher Recommendations 1 and 2 in the portal.

^^okay same

.

My math teacher just submitted her REC… But on my harvard portal it doesnt show it…
Is this because its sunday?? or what?

exactly one month till we find out!!! How are you all holding out?

@lilypippili It’s actually probably even less than that since historically decisions usually come out the Thursday night/Friday night before the 15th (which would be around the 10th or 11th this year)! But ahhhhhh I just want a decision very soon—I hate waiting!

Personally, I’d prefer to either be accepted or rejected. I’m not a fan of this whole deferral thing because I’ll keep my hopes up for another few months when I really just want closure.

@RandomRhino wait really?! Why? How? Do financial aid packets come out early too? And I totally get what you’re saying, although I would still prefer to be deferred… I’m desperate LOL

@lilypippili Here are some links to the Harvard Gazette I tracked down for the past three years—in each case, it points to decisions being released on a Thursday (or in one case, Friday), all before December 15! And in the case of the Class of 2016, decisions were released on December 15, 2011, which was a Thursday. So I’m expecting decisions to be released on a Thursday or Friday this time as well!

And from what I understand, financial aid packet estimates are given in December as well, but you don’t get an official one until March. I believe I read somewhere on these forums that Harvard ends up giving its financial aid department a list of admitted students in early December to process so the aid packages can be prepared and sent out to admitted applicants. But since I read that on CC, we should probably take it with a grain of salt.

You wouldn’t by any chance happen to know what the rate of admission is for deferred applicants, would you? I think I read it’s basically the same as a person applying RD (so about 3%?) but I can’t be sure.

^^3% goodness. Anyway when I visited campus a lot of students said they applied scea and that it did the trick so here’s to hoping it will for us too. I’ve sent in the rest of my apps so I might as well ask this question: if accepted to Harvard, will any or all of you pull your other applications? Or will you wait until April to hear from other schools?

@nsliyromanov I will most likely wait until I hear from other schools in April to fully decide. Although Harvard is my first choice I would want to really give myself as many options possible before deciding where to live for the next 4 years of my life!

Okay another question (sorry guys!): I have a family member that works at Harvard that set up an official interview on campus before I sent in my app. I had to fill out an official interview form, all the standard protocol, and was interviewed by my regional admissions representative. Okay~ now I just received a call from an attorney and alum of the college looking to schedule an interview. I told him I would be happy to do another interview, but my regional rep said I was all set. What do you guys think?? Will I be interviewing again? Additionally, is it a good sign to get a call from an alum LOOKING to interview? Or is this a courtesy given to every applicant?

I think this might by a courtesy given to all students, and the mistake from the ‘second interview’ came from miscommunication within the admissions office. I would still obviously take the interview since it is just another chance to personalize your application!

^^I understand the benefits, but I forgot to mention that my rep explicitly had said I was not going to do a second interview. The attorney seemed nice and said he would get back to me lol and that in 20 years no applicant he had come across had already been interviewed by a rep hahaha can December 10 just be here already so we can move onnnnn

Hmm interesting. I feel exactly the same. I’m waiting for December 10th so I can just get the sad part over with! Haha

@nsliyromanov aren’t you applying to Amherst ED? I was under the impression applying to an SCEA and ED was illegal.

@tuty143
OK, it’s not strictly better for many people to apply, but under some assumptions, yes.

A school is likely to accept more people in a larger applicant pool. Now if less number of applicant means that the best students are applying to other places like MIT, Princeton, that COULD be a benefit. But it’s likely that the more people apply, it’s unlikely that there are more “Best students” applying Harvard Ed and shifting the numbers up so high.

So yeah, that’s an assumption. But at the end it really really doesn’t matter l o l

^^ I am having trouble understanding this.

I was wondering the same about when I would be contacted for an interview. I completely missed the part on the website that stated applications should be submitted by October 15 eventhough the early action deadline is November 1 to be considered for an interview. The only thing I can assume is those who applied by October 15 have been contacted and interviewed and those applying by the actual deadline will be contacted if interviewers are available. :frowning:

@AmericaAbroad nope decided to apply scea to Harvard instead. ED was too risky for me

Just found out I’m interviewing again. How long did all of your interviews last for? What kinds of questions did they ask?

^^ You realize that everyone is going to have different answers for these questions, right?
