Supplemental materials can be submitted separately, but you must send ALL application materials by November 1st for Early Action consideration.
So, your research paper needs to be submitted by that deadline as well.

*I don’t want to mislead anybody, and this was for a different school two years ago, but I think Gibby might be wrong. When I applied Early Action to UChicago, I knew there was this conference coming on something like November 18, and that I’d win at least one award there. That update, which I couldn’t possibly finish before whenever their early-November deadline was, went in the file as soon as I was done. And that was fine, I was accepted. If you can’t finish your research paper because you are waiting on something that won’t be finished until after November 1, I’m sure they won’t penalize you for submitting it later. If you just need a bit of extra time, I’d try to submit it by the deadline.

^^^ “You must send ALL application materials by November 1st for Early Action consideration.” is a quote from Harvard’s SCEA instructions. If your paper will not be ready until after the November 1st deadline, I would call the Admissions Office directly and see if they will accept updates. The number is 617-495-1551.

Thanks. You all are so quick and helpful.
I emailed them but haven’t got a response; I’ll see how I can go about this now…

by the way, is there any advantage for international students applying for SCEA? or is it the same RD?
or is it mainly for hooked applicants in the US?

There’s usually no advantage for anyone applying SCEA or RD, at least not with most schools. SCEA is usually geared towards giving legacy more of an upper hand (at least at Yale). Since Harvard hasn’t had one for a while no one can really answer definitively.
