Harvard should be easy...

just kidding, i don't like the harvard campus... but tell me what you think:

School: small, public, very highly ranked nationally, suburbs of NYC, sends most of its students to top universities
Gender/Ethnicity: Male/Asian
GPA: above 3.8
school doesn't rank, but i am probably in top 10% of 160+ students in grade

SAT I: 760 CR + 700 M + 800 W = 2260

AP Classes and Score (only took Euro so far):
10th: European History - 4
11th: American History, Biology
12th: Physics, Calc B/C, Government, Economics, English, French, Psychology

SAT IIs:
this may: Biology, US History
this june: french, maybe math IIc

ECs:
-tennis team
-National Honor Society, National French Honor Society
-award-winning newspaper: editorial assistant, op-ed editor, editor-in-chief
-award-winning literary magazine: staff editor
-award-winning yearbook: staff editor
-world affairs: 4 model united nations conferences
-regional quiz bowl team: president, cerebral palsy charity, local tv show
-french club: charity funds, hosted movie nights, etc.
-volunteer at local hospital 100+ hours
-retreat leader in church
-play cello, NYSSMA All-State, All-County

my recs should be very solid; i have a great relationship with all of my teachers, especially those who are writing my recs: english teacher and history teacher.
i want to major in history and study politics. also, i want to take classes to study literature (shakespeare) and writing.

schools i'm interested in right now (some are reaches):
-UVA- i've been looking at it recently, and it seems extremely attractive. especially if i could be a jefferson scholar.
-Georgetown
-University of Chicago
-UPenn
-Columbia
-Northwestern
-Williams
-Amherst
and other top universities and LACs

very high reaches (probably not getting in):
Yale, Princeton, Stanford

so what do you think? i know the class of 2009/2013 is supposed to be the most difficult year, especially looking back on my sister who struggled to get into many top schools. she is graduating 2008/2012 and just got into Boston College Honors for almost a full ride. i'm open to a lot of schools because i think i would be happy in most settings, except the countryside, and i have many interests. money is also an issue because i don't want to be in a lot of debt.

bumpp. don’t read it and leave, i’d like as much counsel as i can get.

The first list of schools you have is very solid: Columbia, Northwestern, and UPenn probably the biggestest reaches, but definitely still probable. The others seem like matches/slight reaches. For the “-YPS”, they are reaches for sure. If you do apply, definitely sell yourself as unique. You math SAT will need to be raised to be considered competive, but everything else seems solid. You have some really awesome ECs. As for the money, you will probably get a full ride or significantly less tuition at some nearby schools with similiar stats to BC. Best of luck! :)

ouch…2260 & being asian definitely does not bode too well for you (sry!)
i’m not trying to say anything bad about ur stats but i think 1 thing this yrs admissions has revealed is that sat’s count a lot more than many ppl think (prbly b/c theres so many apps to go thru)

-sniffle-

I WISH SATs counted a lot more. ='[

Re-take your SATs if you can though. You’ve a good thing going on, but you might need the SAT to impress people some more.

bbbbuummmmmppppp

i’m also doing an internship this summer in a historical department, either for the theodore roosevelt association or a museum.

Any more leadership position would be good. volunteer at a hospital and write really good essays.

Did you check that your high school is among those who can nominate Jefferson Scholars? If it can, speak with your guidance counselor about being the nominee. Maybe no one else wants to go to UVA.

Just a suggestion. Good luck.

Harvard’s campus is perfect…but then again, I’ve only taken a virtual tour…
