I discovered this after I posted...shame

debate_addictThey are most definitely overrated from an admissions perspective. From a personal growth/having fun/meeting people perspective, I'd say they are underrated.

where is this year's thread?

sofrosyne - let's start one. haha..

YAY this years thread (although there already is one)

im going to be canaday a single (since my room number ends in 1) hmmmm

i'm in old quincy. HAHAHA.

I'm in Pennypacker..
taking law & psych and political philosophy

i'm sort of disappointed that everyone is saying harvard ssp is not really selective at all. i was pretty excited when i got in, but now i feel like it's just no big deal! i guess i'm bummed because it really is quite expensive but not as prestigious as i'd hoped!

auxsoleil, no one gets a single. you'll probably get a suite which may have singles, but you'll have to talk to your suitemates to see where exactly you'll live.
i'm in pennypacker 35.
timshel_belle, i was, too, but my mom sent them an e-mail and found out that quite a number of people are rejected. besides, they are very pretentious about their requirements. if your essay sucked or you got a small grade on the toefl, you couldn't have gotten in! in fact, admission at harvard would be a lot easier if the competition weren't so high. they have to keep coming up with new criteria of selection in order to stick to the number of admitted students.
it is prestigious, and it's the experience that counts. i really don't think any high school student is so lucky to have (for example) the engineering director of cisco systems as your physics teacher! all the teachers are great and the activities are challenging and it's a great opportunity to figure out what you really want from college life. in the end, i don't think you want to spend 4 years in a place where you don't feel like you belong.
cheer up, you'll see how much you'll love it!

lane, i'm talking political philosophy too!

i heard that they divide the juniors from the seniors, is this true? i'm a (rising) senior and in quincy, so i'm guessing that underclassmen are in the freshmen dorms.

awww sofrosyne, so does that mean my room assignment - which is X 12 - doesn't correspond to a single?
oh well ........

on another note, im on a waitlist for a class that i REALLY want to attend. how do i get into the class?

spiffystars, i'm a rising senior too, there's no differentiation in that sense.maybe only for the floors. check here to find out more about your dorms: http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~trishin/sergey/galleries/2004/froshdorms/index.htm

i'll open a new thread.

heyy ssp sounds like alot of fun from what people are saying.. im taking the holocaust seminar and staying at Quincy.. anyone know anything about either of them? how heavy is the work load? is quincy a nice dorm?

Quincy is a sophomore dorm from what I understand. it has a nice dining hall but that doesnt even matter since all SSPers eat in Annenberg. here's a website:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quincy_House

yeah.. I'd much rather stay in a frosh dorm but oh well..

well, i feel better about it now...thanks!

how long after sending in the housing payment did y'all get your housing assignments?

are there 2 people to a dorm or 4? i'm confused. lol.

i know that sophomores (rising juniors) are housed together, and have a stricter curfew. idk if they'd take up an entire dorm, but maybe a couple of floors or something.

This question is probably for SSP alums, but I just got my housing packet with all of the rental info - what should we rent, if anything? I'm not sure if I should like bring my TV or something & my mom isn't crazy about the price of the fridge..

Man, i haven't gotten my housing packet yet! i'm really paranoid about all the things i need to pack and buy and whatnot. so if someone could answer lane1290's question that would be...lovely.

hey i'm a rising senior staying in quincy
i can answer a few questions
1. rising juniors, rising seniors & rising freshman (college) are all separated by dorms...thayer & canaday are for rising juniors...the rest of the yard/union dorms & quincy are for rising seniors mostly, and some for freshman (like hollis)...they have to separate us by age cuz the rising juniors have a strict curfew every night...undergrads are in the other houses, like adams
2. for rentals, i hear they are wayyy worth it...especially the fan...also i hear it's good to have water bottles in the dorms, & a fridge if you can, since we can only go to annenburg at certain times
3. no one is put in singles...you can request one but they only have a limited amount...the amount of people in a room depends on the room...u can find the floorplans for some of the houses/dorms online...for example my room just has 2 people (i already found my roommate!)...but next door has 4 people...u never know
anyone taking irish myth & folklore ss1?
if u guys have facebook join the Harvard ssp '07 group...there are over 160 people there who are going this summer
