Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Caltech, UC's?

Hi, I am a CA senior in a nationally ranked high school and applying to Harvard, Stanford (SCEA), MIT, Caltech, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis, and UCSD. I am considering an Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Pre-med major, in that order. I do not think that I am qualified enough to get into any of my private colleges, so I will most likely decide between EE at Berkeley and Bioengineering at UCSD. My class is extremely competitive and the typical college list is usually: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT, Caltech, UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSD. Any opinions or comments on my chances in getting in these schools are highly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks, flopsy. What are my chances in getting in my private colleges?

Anyone care to give me his/her two cents?

regarding your chances at HYPS, you dont distinguish yourself. your info looks the same as a million other asians out there.

I dont understand why everyone says they go to a nationally ranked competitive high school. I go to Exeter, which is hands down the top, and I dont whine about going to a competitive high school. It just makes you better and if you cant handle the competition at your school then you dont even understand how it is at places like HYPSM.

Well, of course there are plenty of nationally ranked high schools. I just thought I'd say it to clarify that my high school isn't your typical, middle-of-the-road one; the CA API index for our high school is probably within the top 5%. It is by no accounts top-tier, but definitely up there somewhere. Going to a respected, rather well-known school, especially in the same state/region, WILL make a difference along the way, however small it may be.

As for saying that my high school is competitive, I said no such thing. I said that my class is competitive, "class" in terms of 2006. Although I could be wrong, but the competititon for college acceptance seems to get more and more intense each year. Again, I am not saying that it hasn't always been extremely competitive to get into particular colleges.

Sorry if I came off sounding harsh, anyways,i hope you get into all the schools you want and all goes well.

You're math competitions are impressive, but your SATs are a little low. Your EC involvement is impressive, but weak in the sense that there are not many leadership positions.
However, you are a strong math/sci guy, and from CA, so what about UC Berkeley? It's ranked up there with the ivies, and you have an advantage because you're a resident.
Despite the MV Calc and math competitions, you're not the strongest candidate for HYPS.

Yeah, I'm not counting on getting into my four private colleges, so I'm probably going to end up doing EE at Berkeley or maybe Bioengineering at UCSD. I think I have a very high chance of getting in both of those.

As for the private colleges, I understand that I'm not the best candidate. There are plenty of things that I could do better that other people are better at: SAT's, GPA's, EC's, whatever. Sorry, DiamondT. I'm thankful for your advice, and I know that you were just trying to be truthful and realistic. I totally understand why my credentials wouldn't be quite up-to-par to HYPS level.

It doesn't hurt to try to get in, though. :D Even if I might not have the best resume, college admission is still often a crapshoot. (Harvard, I know, is out of my league entirely; I'm more focused on Stanford, Caltech, and MIT anyway.)

Thanks pianoking7 and DiamondT for your input. I appreciate it.

A Physics professor whom I know said that it's unlikely that I'll be able to get into Berkeley for EE or Bioengineering. Is it likely that I won't be accepted because of my 2160 SAT score?

That certainly won't help your application, but it also won't hurt you. Basically, a score like 2160 (1400s) is enough to be considered, which I assume is what you're going for.

Enough to be considered? I'm thinking more in terms of getting accepted with that major.

what school do you go to?
