Harvard does send likely letters; I received one this past week (the letter's dated March 15th). It reads, "I am delighted to report that the Admissions Committee has asked me to inform you that you are likely to be admitted to the Class of 2009. We anticipate that we will send you the formal letter of admission in April, assuming (as we do) that you will maintain your current academic and personal standards. Each year, only a small number of outstanding applicants receive this early positive indication. We are of course eager to encourage you to choose Harvard. The opinion of the Admissions Committee is not merely that your accomplishments- academic, extracurricular and personal- are impressive, but also that you would be a particularly good match for the opportunities and challenges you would find here. In short, we think you would flourish at Harvard." It then goes on to give facts about Boston/Cambridge and describe the school. To be honest, I didn't think Harvard sent likely letters until I received mine. I heard from a friend that although Harvard has been known to avoid the likely letter, it, over the past few years, phased the likely back into its recruiting repertoire. I'm not sure if that is entirely accurate, but I definitely know that Harvard does send likely letters.

Assuming likely letters are limited, why do you think you may have qualified for one? URM? Some other reason?

archermom: Thanks for the info. I guess it showed in my app that I didn't really want to go there anymore. I was so excited about Haverford in the beginning, but I was starting to doubt that the unique environment was for me at the time I was filling out applications. I'm really glad though that your daughter is enjoying her time there. :)
