Harvard Transfer After Taking A Break From College!

Hello CC,

I have a unique situation to present to the forum. This situation does not only only relate to Harvard Transfer, but any University Transfer.

I have completed high school with a 2.8 GPA. Terrible, I know. Please keep the negative comments down, I've heard them too many times.
I have outstanding extra curricular activities such as completing 16 varsity seasons of sports and excelling greatly in all of them. I have been in 4 music programs such as jazz band, marching band, ext. Clubs, executive student council, and many other things such as many volunteer hours.

I applied to the United States Naval Academy and was denied. But, I am applying again for this upcoming fall. I actually just turned in my nomination application. Wish me luck!

I planned on majoring in aerospace engineering, but have suddenly gained an interest in computer science and want to pursue that instead.

I have completed one full-time year of school at Eastern Michigan University. I ended up hating the school for reasons not needed to list, but just understand it is ranked the cheapest D1 school for a reason... I also received a 1.2 gpa.... So I dropped out of Eastern. I am now a part-time student at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

Anyways, now that you have basic info of me, let me explain what I have planned.

I would like to take a two year break from college. During this two year break, I want to be self taught. I will read many books, etc. I would progress as much as I can in math. Since I want to change my path to computer science, I would became fluent in many computer languages, and anything related to CS I would try to learn. I would take on an engineering path and advance in english.

After my two year break, I would test into high level classes at the Univ. of Michigan and hopefully Ace all of them. After successfully completing one extremely hard semester, I would apply as a Transfer to Harvard's CS program.

So, has anyone heard of any students who have successfully Transferred to Harvard after having a couple unsuccessful semesters of college and ended up taking a break? Or anything related?

Thanks!

Are you aware that transfer admission to Harvard is notoriously competitive? It’s way more difficult than freshman admission because so few people leave Harvard.

When I was at Harvard a generation ago, I knew a few transfer students. (There aren’t very many of them.) Before coming to Harvard, they had all been top students at elite universities and colleges, such as Michigan and Williams.

I do not think the autodidact angle will work for you at Harvard. Sorry. They have a lot of applicants for very few spots, and they just don’t have to take anybody who doesn’t have a record of very high achievement.

Thanks for the honesty. My best option is to keep applying to the Naval Academy each year. I find service academies the best approach to “restarting” ones college career. Agreed?

Reapplying to service academies with the same low GPA will not result in acceptances. You should consider spending a few years at a community college and try to earn excellent grades to demonstrate your potential to thrive academically.

Right now, there is no reason for academies or colleges to give you a slot when there are plenty of other excellent candidates out there. Your previous sports accomplishments will have little pull unless you are eligible to be recruited, which requires solid grades as well as proof of current championships/stats.
