There was a really active thread for Harvard transfer applicants on this site last year as well as the year before, during this time of year...I wonder why it's been so quiet recently...

Anyone applying?

Anyone applying?

i am...

yeah, looking at the archives it seems that people were a lot more talkative last year.

less than a month left to decisions, if memory serves me right i think they come out around the 20th?

you probably scared everyone off with that crimson article :D

Haha...maybe you're right brand_182...

I want people to come though!

I have refused to read that article of yours:)

Oh I'm sure they want to come too! ;)

where is everybody else applying besides harvard?

i am shooting for yale and stanford as well.

When are you all applying? For Fall 2008?

Hey guys,
I asked a question on the Harvard board thisafternoon-I guess I should put it here too. I've got some questions about general life as a transfer at Harvard so here goes-

First, since transfers are placed directly into upperclass houses without being able to choose a group of friends to block with, is the social life more difficult for transfers? How is the first year, living with people who have all chosen into a group? How is it being stuck in one house for three years that you didn't get to choose into in the first place?

Second, how difficult is it to arrange special majors/fulfill requirements/take grad classes/go abroad (as a sophmore transfer)? I hear that for going abroad, sophmores need to choose and arrange their major by the end of fall semester...which would seem difficult for a transfer student. Any light on this?

I know the chances that I'll get in are slim to none, but if I do I want to make sure my decision is as informed as possible-I know harvard isnt the only school in the world! I also applied to Wellesley (accepted) Bowdoin (outlier-and rejected-I hope thats not a bad omen, as I thought it would be a pretty easy one) and Tufts.

Thanks!

We're probably all depressed; the chances of getting in are so slim this year. Hopefully everyone will perk up a bit as decisions get closer.

Even though we all would like to get in there is no real reason to be depressed or pessimistic. It is only one school and there is so much more to life than any single school. I too will be nervous, though, I remind myself that it is completely out of my hands at this point and I have finals to study for anyway. No matter what the decision is I will be satisfied that I gave it my best shot and I will have no regrets. If by some miracle I due happen to get in I would be extremely grateful to say the least. I hope that they take some of us so all that time and effort given by everyone was not done in vain, lol. Good-luck to everyone!!!!

I'm waiting to hear from Harvard, Yale and Dartmouth.

Currently studying Arabic and Persian at Edinburgh University, I'm from London and really have no idea what I've got myself into besides waiting for bad news.

Already got rejected from Middlebury, is this a good indicator of what to expect from the other schools?

Also, I've heard nothing from Yale about online status pages etc. They acknowledged my application then nothing. Slightly strange.

Bump.
Just cuz I find it amusing.

windcloudultra-

how have you found harvard to be as a transfer? I've heard rumors that it is quite hard to make friends, as most people are already entrenched in social circles...

Well...I know different people take different approaches. A few of my fellow transfers decided early on that they wanted to stick closely with other transfers. Someone I know has a close group of friends--mostly transfers--plus a few additional people outside that circle.

Personally, I still occasionally talk to some of the transfers, and there are a few I hang out with quite a lot. I'm a music concentrator, so naturally many of my friends are musicians. (esp. because the department is rather small)

I know another transfer who got involved with theatre here rather quickly, I a lot of his friends are theatre people. Furthermore, depending who you get roomed with, you could transition into another social circle via that route.

Of course, the key is to get involved with activities that you enjoy (and therefore, likely to meet likeminded people) once you get here. No matter what, it's going to be a bit harder making friends than freshmen are...I honestly think that's true wherever you transfer.

As long as you don't lock yourself in a room, never see the light of day, and get involved, you have nothing to worry about.

You could always take the approach of the first person I described: find other transfers and latch on and make a group that way. If you found that you didn’t make friends at your previous school for the same reason, chances are you’ll have problems making friends anywhere.

That's good advice. As for there not really being an active thread- the chance is so low this year (even more so than other years) that I've pretty much given up hoping... : (

good seeing you again on campus chanchito.

I was the first to hear about the reduction in numbers this year, then I heard back yesterday from the only person who can support my application that he isn't able to this year so i'm not holding my breath when decisions come out.

best of luck everyone.

I want to apply for sophomore standing in Fall 2008... but I dont want to apply only to have barely any spots left.

hey guys,
don't mean to be a pain-but I'd really like some insight into how the housing system and everything works out for transfers at harvard (see my above post). I realize that making friends might not be too hard, but living apart from your friends etc. when everyone else is all together can be kind of weird (the experience I had this year). Also-do transfers get placed in suites with other transfers, or is it just on a room by room basis?

Yeah, IMissBoston's questions are definitely some concerns of my own... how does housing work, and do people get to meet others easily, or are "cliques" of people already formed?
