@Dataminer he did get to meet with the head of physics when he visited and felt they had a great connection (friend of a friend) but I doubt that weighs on admission.
@nrsebayer I’m confused about your son having been already recruited by other ivies? Didn’t he have to commit to them? Also, did you son take AP physics, SAT? Physics subject test? I only say this bc for physics as a major they seriously take academic superstars. Not saying you son isn’t one, just wondering what his background is re physics. I would say that AP physics is a bare minimum as well as AP Calc BC
someone wrote this earlier (on one of the first few pages of this thread):
“I submitted my application on September 12th, and had an interview with an alumni two weeks later. I just got a call from admissions offer; GREAT news to hear after coming out of a movie theatre!! Obviously not an acceptance until December, but getting a likely letter/call was unbelievable. Good luck to all!”
I know we’ve established likely letters aren’t sent in the early action round but how many people on average get likely calls early?
Weirdly just had harvard TedX account follow me on Instagram… this happen to anyone else??
@skieurope , @hgrad2010 , I’ve been following this thread, and so far no international student from a country with limited interviews has described being offered an interview as of yet. No one has said anything about this on Harvard SCEA International Students Interview thread either. I know that receiving an interview in these countries means that it is highly likely that you have been shortlisted.
Is it at all possible that they are yet to offer interviews to most of the international students in these countries, seeing as I can’t seem to find anyone who has received one? I know it’s very late in the admissions process–I’m just trying to be hopeful
@cmc1999 my son was recruited to other vies for rowing. His AP physics score was a 5. Not sure you understand that we do not think my son is a stand out. He’s just a regular applicant.
@cmc1999 he declined recruitment offers
@nrsebayer do you think declining recruitment offers to roll the dice on a 5% school is worth it? What did the coaches say when he declined their offers? Is the door still open if Harvard defers him?
@cmc1999 he did not take the sat physics subject test.
@cmc1999 yes I do think it’s worth it when my kid wants to choose his school based on academics and his chosen field. As of today yes the door is still open and we are confident he can walk on to any of these programs upon admission should the recruitment door close which it likely will in the next week or 2.
@nrsebayer I guess what I’m saying, will due respect, is he is taking a tremendous gamble. Physics in particular is hyper competitive and I doubt the physics professors on the admissions committee mess with any kids less then Regeneron and other national international award winners, published in journals etc. (my father is a physicist so I know about this) and I’m not saying it’s impossible but he’s in a tough position, not a recruited athlete and not the typical physics applicant that gets accepted. There’s a chinese expression “ma-ma hu-hu” it translates to “horse-horse/tiger-tiger” Not a horse and not a tiger.
@lilyfullford How did they know our Instagram account? Did you give it to them? Or was it just a coincidence? Maybe they know more about you than you think they know
@cmc1999 noted
@nrsebayer Agree with @cmc1999 that AP Physics is a bare minimum. I mean Physics C, both parts. We have non-science major kids here scoring 5 on all four AP physics tests.
If your son in his heart wishes to take the gamble of Harvard, then that is something he must have considered heavily. It must be the right decision if he turned down so many other wonderful schools. Harvard looks for all sorts of applicants, and your son sounds better than average with his rowing achievements and his love for physics. Keep hope. I’m sure he’ll be happy with his decisions. @nrsebayer
Never gave them my accounts or anything and my Instagram isn’t even my full name. Very weird, but I do have some friends who are student volunteers in the admissions office and run some non for profits at Harvard, could be that. Still, very strange @dataminer
@Dataminer @cmc1999 please share the source of your information on minimums for physics
@nrsebayer there are 15 years of accepted/rejected threads on here. But seriously, I wish the best for your son following his dream and all. But I think you are giving up a lot and if the door is closing and this doesn’t work out.
@cmc1999 thanks. We allowed our som the freedom to choose his path regardless of the outcome. No regrets
@cmc1999 with all due respect you don’t know my son
