Harvard Versus Stanford

Hello.

I was recently accepted into both Harvard and Stanford! My interest is in biological science/public health. I know that Stanford has an amazing Human Biology program that focuses on my major, but many of my peers have said that Harvard is the place to be to study public health. Do you think you can give me your thoughts on this? Thank you.

I think that you should follow your heart and go to Stanford. Don’t do something because your friends advices you too :D

Follow your own intuition! :)

Harvard’s school of public health is top-notch, and if you’re more into pure biological science then come here. If you’re considering an engineering slant then go to Stanford.

It seems that you like Stanford more and you just want to go to Harvard because of external forces. Who is going to college for the next 4 years… you or your friends? Make your own decision… it seems that you like Stanford more, so just go there.

actually I don’t really like Stanford more than Harvard. I am about 45-55 Stanford-Harvard right now. however, I have never been to Harvard before, so my judgment on the two hasn’t been finalized.

I did love the Stanford weather when I visited and the fact that the quarter system
allowed for recovery of GPA should anything untoward happen. However the very same
quarter system seemed ‘really short’. I could not see myself enjoying my ECs but rather
worrying about the term ending. Bio is definitely comparable but Public Health would be
advantageous at Harvard.

You might want to also check out Harvard’s Special Concentration. You get to name
your degree- check out [alumni](http://www.specialconcentrations.fas.harvard.edu/alumni.html</a>).There are numerous Public Health related special concentrators.

I am in the exact same positioin. Im leaning a little towards harvard but Stanford’s human biology major is enticing. I generally want to avoid the plant/non-human side of biology. I was thinking of maybe majoring in neurobio or maybe just sticking with straight bio. I know harvard has the best med school in the country, does the premed program follow suit?

I am not so sure, but one of my teachers has told me that Stanford students are having trouble in getting into medical school right now because they let students drop classes without the W. Can anyone second on that?

Well anything, Medical School is tough no matter where you get into. The average acceptance rate is fairly low ranging from 1-3%.

“one of my teachers has told me that Stanford students are having trouble in getting into medical school right now because they let students drop classes without the W. Can anyone second on that?”

Not true… first of all, that policy would help students, because students don’t have to show they dropped it. Stanford’s policy is that students can drop a course until about 5 weeks into the quarter without having the ‘W’ show up. After that, you can drop it up until the final exam, but the ‘W’ will show up. In either case, it wouldn’t matter that much in med school admissions.

Stanford’s humbio program would suit you well.
