Harvard vs. Duke vs. Columbia PreMed

My daughter got accepted to the following schools:

WUSTL
Brandeis
Northwestern
UCLA
Brown
JHU
Pomona
USC
Amherst
Duke
Harvard
Columbia

But her top three schools are Harvard, Duke, and Columbia. She is going in for neurobiology/neuroscience (pre-medicine). She'll be happy attending ANY of the schools she got accepted to, but those are her top three. What are your thoughts/experiences with regards to the premed program and research opportunities at these schools?

Could someone please comment on the AP credit on these schools?

Is there a hospital easily accessible to premed students at Harvard? Working distance?

Any of the three would be great for pre-meds. All three graduate scores of pre-meds, who are accepted to medical school. I don’t know about Duke and Columbia, but I know lots of pre-meds at Harvard change their minds about what they want to do when they find out about other opportunities in the world, too.

Getting great research opportunities isn’t a problem at any of the schools. The hospitals affiliated with Harvard are slightly less convenient to get to from Harvard than the equivalent hospital at Duke, or the hospitals in NYC, but that’s a really minor difference, especially since both Boston/Cambridge and NYC have excellent public transportation. Furthermore, much of the interesting research that pre-meds may engage in happens in labs, not in hospitals, and if you take “hospital” out of the question, then everything gets much more convenient.

Columbia differs from the other two in that it has a fairly extensive core curriculum that governs a lot of what people do in their first four semesters, and that does not relate directly to medical school admission requirements. That can be a good thing, or a bad thing, depending.

Of course, you may have noticed that Columbia is located approximately at the Center of the World, and Harvard is located precisely at the Center of the Academic World. Duke is located in Durham, North Carolina, which isn’t that far from Raleigh or Chapel Hill.

North Carolina.

Geographically, that’s almost the Center of North Carolina; economically and culturally, maybe so, maybe no. In any event, it’s not New York City, nor is it Boston/Cambridge. Again, that can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending.

I’m a pre-med neuroscience major at Duke, and I’d love to answer any specific questions you might have about Duke or neuroscience in general. Feel free to PM me at your convenience.

@JHS Thanks for the insight.

@ Gailforce, nice coincidence! She is going in for neuroscience as well. Thanks for the offer.

My sisters both go to harvard and are premed with a concentration in social studies. They are very interested in public health issues and helping the community, so they are regular volunteers at the homeless shelter, and are basically some of the heads of the HGHAC… if your daughter is like that, maybe harvard?

Any of the three would be excellent choices, but if I was choosing, it would be Harvard!

She said she would love to study in a school that does tons of community work. Most of her EC were with the special needs communities. Which of these schools have the most community interaction or outreach program that is just for EC?

Duke definitely has the best community work. Just look up DukeEngage.

I’m sure that all of them have plenty of community service opportunities. Here is the umbrella organization for Harvard: [Phillips Brooks House Association](http://pbha.org/)
