There is a similar thread in the Stanford forum but I thought I'd post it here. Comment on what makes one better than the other...in terms of faculty, weather, college life etc.

*Disclosure: I've been admitted to Stanford Class of 2011 so I may be a bit biased. ;)

Either way, they are both great schools. I go to Stanford so I may be a bit biased.

Stanford has great weather/locations, is a lot better at engineering/Science/CS
However it lacks the urban feel of harvard, probably less prestigious.

Harvard is a lot better known, in Boston, close to a lot of other colleges. But it's really cold.
I'm sure you don't see people working on their tans in November @ Harvard

Engineering and CS, sure. But regular science? I am not aware of any evidence that would lead me to believe that Stanford is a 'lot better' than Harvard in science. I think it's a tie.

Well as far as applied Sciences go we are definitely better.
My mistake, I was thinking Bio-Engineering/ Chemical Engineering
when I wrote "Science".

And I also want to add, that while I am saying all this stuff ... Yes technically Stanford is probably better than Harvard at alot of stuff, while Harvard is a bit better than us at alot of stuff as well. But the prestige of the department shouldn't really matter much, we are all undergrads ... we don't know anything yet... we just need to learn the basics...The quality should be close to the same at any leading university.
now if you were doing your PhD maybe it would make sense to see how top rated the particular department is.
It is much wiser to choose on the "touchy-feely" things. :)
