Harvard vs. Yale for Math/Economics

Hey everyone. I was accepted to Yale EA, and just yesterday was shocked to discover I was accepted to Harvard as well. Now, however, I'm looking towards the difficult decision I'm about to have to make. So with some background on me, I hope you can give me some insight on what might be the better school for me. (I've visited both.)

Academically, I have loved math since I was a little kid. But as I'm getting older, I find that I like the applied side of it (the actual "numbers") more than the theoretical. I've also recently started some eco courses and they've interested me greatly. I'm currently looking to go into finance (maybe business grad school?) after college. Plus, its important to note that, although I love math and breeze through BC, I'm NOT one of those math-challenge superstars. I've never qualified for AIME, even, and I'm kind of afraid that the math at Harvard would be TOO hard, even though the Harvard math program is (significantly?) better than Yale's.

Socially, I like to consider myself...well, "normal." Saying I'm not a nerd is probably rather conceited, but in all fairness its true. I've never done research or any of that--I'm smart, but I wouldn't call myself an "intellectual." I work hard for my grades, but the weekend comes and its my time to just have fun and relax. I feel like the people at Yale might be more my "type" than those at Harvard, but I don't know for sure that this is true.

Part of that having fun, though, tends to be centered around getting out and such. I know for a fact that I love Boston and would have a ton to do there...New Haven, not so much.

Thanks for any insight you can provide. I've visited both schools already, and besides knowing about the surrounding area, I wasn't struck by either being in love with or hating either one.

You actually sound like more of a Harvard person than a Yale person to me.

Hey congrats!
I also found out yesterdy that I have been accepted to both Harvard and Yale and cant decide :(
Your biggest concern is your major(mine being bio and international relations), but what do you know about the two schools in general? How are the people there different? I heard that Harvard gives easier on the grades than yale. It may be different for every major but is it true in any sense?

You definitely sound like a Yalie. Yalies "work hard and play hard". Most party and enjoy themselves on weekends, and then do homework, study, and do extracurriculars during the other times.

I'm so jealous!!!!

Either way, you can't go wrong with both choices.

For math go to Harvard.

^ and for econ (although they're both phenomenal).

i say harvard. haha - only wish i could get in! but yeah - not only is there BOSTON and tons of other college students, harvard generally gives better money. as for prestige, harvard is probably above yale (just because harvard is probably the best known college in the world)

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately, I just got my Harvard financial aid letter, and it contained...nothing. Yale I'm at least getting some money from...so this may be factoring into the decision...

Talk to Harvard if financial concerns are the deciding factor. They may match or top Yale if given the opportunity. It's weird for the two schools to give drastically different fin aid, though -- how much is Yale offering?

Yale is offering 8k (~6k of their own and 2k of a term-time job). Which, while not a substantial amount, is just enough to "close the gap" on what my parents are able to pay for me for college. It'll allow me not to need loans.

You can get a term-time job at Harvard with no problem. But tell Harvard about the $6k grant, and see what they say about that.

HARVARD. yale is not known for math or economics, but Harvard IS.

Based no your academic pursuits....Math is by far the choice..not a question....
