you are sure about this ewho? cuz' it sounded like they can find out who applied to Yale SCEA....and to the coach i think it was more of a loyalty thing too, he wanted to make sure harvard is my first choice

I could last year. Do you think Harvard could not? They can't find who applied, but who got in.

What did you mean Harvard told you not to apply to the other Ivies early. I assume it was the coach. I do not believe Harvard would tell you not to apply. If that is the case it is from the coach go with the request for a likely letter. However, you will have to get your app in right a way to get processed prior to the other deadlines. If he/she is not willing to give you one, then you should ignore Harvard and apply to Yale SCEA. You might know in mid from Harvard in October with a likely letter. Have everything else ready to go for Nov 1 in case it falls through.

harvard doesnt have an early program, only regular decision. yale is early action, so id recommend applying there early since it nonbinding

hikids- you are saying I should be able to get a likely letter from Harvard by October? thanks for the great advice i will look into it

The Ivy coaches communicate, so they do know if an athlete is applying somewhere else while verbally committing to their school (assuming she is in contact with the second coach.)

Belle123- she knows Harvard doesn't have an early program. But for recruited athletes, likely letters are given early to compete for recruits, especially now that H doesn't have SCEA.

With a likely letter, you are safe, and won't have to apply elsewhere. But you will have to keep up your grades and keep your record clean. Good luck!!

exactly thanx fauve you understood my problem

the harvard coach told me to make sure I submit my app by Dec. 1st, about a month before the regular deadline..is that a signal that they will send me a likely letter, you think? or should I push my counselor to ask the coach for the letter?

Likely letters can be issued as early as October 1st, and are most effectively used as recruiting tools when issued before other school's ED deadlines.

I'd ask the Harvard coach if he/she thinks that admissions would be able to get you a likely letter in October if you got an application in this month.

Edit: What hikids says in post #23 is good advice.

okay just wondering about the likely letters...are they pretty much a guarantee of admission if you keep your grades up? has a school ever rejected someone after sending them a "likely" letter?

My understanding is that likely letters are as reliable as a regular acceptance; the only reasons they wouldn't come through would be for the same reasons a regular acceptance would be rescinded; ie. precipitous drop in grades, plagarism, disciplinary issues, etc.

If anyone has evidence to the contrary, I (and my DS) would really like to know.

Just wait RD to apply. RD will probably not hurt your chances to Yale, but it probably will hurt your chances to Harvard.

Yep, changed my mind about Yale.

Personally, I'd just apply to all three in the regular round. That way, you don't screw your chances at Harvard, but you still spread out the risk of not getting into any.

thanks everyone! really appreciate all your inputs

I think I am just going to apply to all three RD, cross my fingers and hopefully I get into one....

However, I am going to apply early action to Georgetown, Rice, and Boston College, because the H coach says I just can't apply to any other ivies. How competitive are those schools early action? I heard EA is very tough right? Hopefully, I get into one of them...hehe

Oh and I am applying to around 13 total schools...lol is that too many?

Every kid I've seen who was a serious recruit at Harvard was also a serious recruit at the others. The schools that do have EA/ED like Yale and Columbia take the vast majority of their athletes in that round. If I were your parent, I'd tell you to pin the Harvard coach down. How serious of a recruit are you if Yale and Columbia are not also very interested? You stand a chance of not getting into any of the schools if Harvard is not articulating a firm commitment. The coach should be able to look at your grades ad scores and all but guarantee you'll get in for you to forgo the early round as an athlete.

13 sounds like alot of work, especially if you have the support & stats for Harvard. Yes, if the H coach recommended you get your app in by Dec. 1st, he may push for a likely letter fro you. One trackster, class of '12 received her/his letter in early December last year, the first year of all RD at H.

You may have a merry holiday, and be able to box up all the other apps material due Dec.31/Jan.1!!

hehe thnx fauve...cross my fingers and hopefully i get that likely letter...will save me a lot of trouble...thanks for all your help...are you a harvard student/parent?

Yes, we went through the recruiting process also. Hmom5 gave good advice above concerning the other Ivies.
