Harvard Waitlist Waiting Room 2015

Has anyone tried calling the Harvard admissions office to ask how their application was lacking? I know they’ll probably just say what we all expect–this year, there were thousands of amazing applicants, simply couldn’t take them all, blah blah blah–but is there a shot they might be willing to reveal why someone was waitlisted?

It’s not about their willingness to reveal it. There is almost never an actual reason. It’s like asking why you finished ninth in a crowded marathon field instead of fifth. Somebody else ran faster.

Hanna: I think you’re right, but in some cases, might there not be a quantifiable thing about an applicant that got him waitlisted instead of accepted? Such as GPA wasn’t high enough, or maybe teacher recommendations were a little lackluster?

My friend was accepted and he had the exact same stats as me. We have the same “special” extracurricular, the same GPA (more or less, mine might be a tad higher), same teachers giving our rec letters, same class rank…Except for race (he is a URM), we are exactly the same. And my SAT scores were about 200 points better. I even read his CommonApp essay and I can say, without too much bias, that while it was good, I don’t think it was better than mine. But I was not accepted. So I think that there must be SOMETHING that was wrong with me. Or maybe they just didn’t want a “replica?”

Waitlisted at Harvard, Princeton, Penn, and Brown :(.

I think I’ll go to WashU unless something changes. I’m happy with WashU, but I don’t want to wait anymore for these other schools, which more likely than not will not be options for me.

pkm, my daughter was in waitlist hell last year (Cornell, Harvard, Middlebury and I swear that I can’t remembember the 4th), only pursued Harvard with any gusto, didn’t get in, landed up at Northwestern and LOVES it! As I’ve said before, it has become a total crapshoot. All the people on the waitlists of the great schools that people here have mentioned would be excellent students at those schools; the schools simply don’t have room. And they will regret a few that they accepted over others who will go on to be fabulous at other places. Good luck to you, whatever happens. Wash U is an amazing school.

I’m still in absolute shock. Also had no idea there were that many people on the waitlist. I’m hoping they’ll decide to take a chance on me, but even if they don’t, I still consider it an honor just to have made it this far!

Oh my goodness, so many people waitlisted!! Oh well, I am honored just to be in the waitlist. I expected to be flat out rejected with my stats. Stanford here I come!

Does anyone here think that the waitlist number could potentially be in the thousands? Like 1,000-ish?

I mean, I personally think that many of the people here on cc are obviously very concerned with their education, so it’s likely that a lot of us are interested in the Ivy league schools, particularly in this case, Harvard.

I know the waitlist for Harvard has generally been smaller than some of the other Ivies like Yale and Princeton, who often place more students on waitlist than they have in their actual enrolled class.

Can anyone offer an opinion? I’m just really curious. I don’t want to get any false hope, but I imagine it’s hard not to when you’ve dreamt of going to Harvard your whole life. Ah well. We can all dream a little, can’t we?

and yes, we can dream, but it hurts that much more. i’d rather not fall from the clouds.
