Being from Texas, I have only seen snow once in my life. Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with the cold and also on how long winter is in general?

Winter is long. Bring lots of layers. A fleece (such as a North Face) is good to get you through the fall. Rain boots (particulary if you are female) come in handy because Harvard gets very slushy. You will hear varying opinions about whether or not people wear snow boots, but my kid found them to be handy and warm. Don't forget gloves.

Snow is fun!

It doesn't get really cold until early December and it starts warming up late March.

We're from Orange County California. My son has only seen snow 1 time in our local mountains. We are concerned about what type of jacket and shoes to get for him. I'm sure his rainbow sandals and vans tennis shoes won't cut it in the snow. Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

I'd actually say that the first month or so here he should be fine with sneakers and whatever he wears at home (maybe a fleece for night-time, North Face Denali's are very popular here). In terms of what to get for once it gets colder, I'd actually say to wait until he gets up here so that he can see what his peers are wearing and decided what to get accordingly. With the magic of the internet (and Downtown Boston too) he can get pretty much anything under the sun once he decides.

You are making a mom feel so much better h-bomber! Again, thanks for all your help with us newbies :)

Actually, for students from warm-weather states who qualify for a certain level of financial aid, H will give one-time aid toward the purchase of winter clothes:
Beneficiary Aid - Prefrosh

He can buy his cold weather clothes in Boston. Don't get them in warm weather states. There are plenty of stores in Boston and Cambridge, and he can get advice from other students about what to buy.

Thanks gadad and northstarmom. Cold weather clothes is not something we have around here. I don't even think they sell good gloves or jackets except for sporting goods stores at Christmas time. Those can be very expensive.
