The University of Wisconsin at Madison was deemed the top U.S. university in a TrendTopper MediaBuzz Internet analysis by the Global Language Monitor.

The list is compiled using a mathematical model to measure the "brand equity" of colleges in terms of their global impact on the Internet and social media during the year.

The University of Chicago came in second place for 2010, followed by Harvard, while Yale was ninth. Some other top-ranked universities, including Stanford, Princeton, and UCLA, did not make the Top 10.

The Top 10 U.S. universities for 2010 according to the survey are;

1.University of Wisconsin, Madison.
2.University of Chicago
3.Harvard
4.Massachusetts Institute of Technology
5.Columbia
6.University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
7.Cornell
8.University of California, Berkeley
9.Yale
10.University of Texas, Austin.

Could these results reflect the occurrence of newsworthy events at some of these colleges during the year? I seem to remember news events involving some of them.

It’s hard to see here at CC, but most people are less interested in prestige and more interested in value. They understand that an excellent education can be obtained outside of the Ivy League, at a fraction of the cost. In this rough economy, the elites lose some of their luster.

True, several of the non-Ivies on the list are just as pricey. Let me put it another way: The names “Harvard” and “Yale” just don’t carry the magic elsewhere that they do here.

Depends on whom you’re asking and what criteria is being measured. Each list and ranking has its own bias and means of measuring. I think many people around the world still rank Harvard & Yale much higher than UW and U of Chicago.

It’s early here. I thought the title to this thread said, “Harvard, Yale beaten in University BAND survey.” Of course, THAT would actually matter. ;)
