So it seems that my situation right now will likely come down to being Yale, Harvard, or Duke. The complicating thing is that I received a very generous scholarship award at Duke that pays for all my expenses (Tuition, Room & Board, etc..) and also gives me great opportunities such as Paid study abroad programs and gauranteed internships. While this is great, My #1 choice has always been Yale but it would cost around 12 grand a year, most of which I would have to take out in loans. So while I prefer Yale I was wondering if you guys think it is worth it to turn down this scholarship at Duke, which is an amazing school in its own right. Harvard is also in the discussion, although im not sure of their financial package yet, and would prefer Yale if they were the same. But if you have any insight into exploring the Harvard path that would also be appreciated.

For some quick background: I am most likely going to major in a Pre-Med field, probably biology, so med school is also in consideration. I value well-roundedness in school, meaning a good intellectual and social atmosphere. By "social" I do consider the quality of parties, number of social events, perhaps greek scene, etc. I live on the west coast so all would be far away regardless.

Honestly, I think the benefits of the Robertson scholarship program are too good to pass up. Furthermore, Duke has a great biomedical program and very established pre-med track. You can’t go wrong at any of these schools, but I think Duke for free, especially for your interests, would be the best choice.

“I am most likely going to major in a Pre-Med field, probably biology.”

I would take the full-ride at Duke, as it would seem that medical school or at least graduate school is looming in your future. You don’t want to be starting your first job with a “mortgage on your brain.”

You have an amazing opportunity before you: to graduate w/an excellent education and many high honors – and to be debt free as you face Med School. Congratulations. You won’t find a bigger booster of Yale than me, but if you were my kid, I’d tell you to get ready to enjoy North Carolina (which is beautiful, BTW. My roomie’s g/f attended there and we road tripped to Duke every year).

As a member of Yale 2014, I am biased, but here is my opinion.

It isnt clear if the OP has the robertson or a different scholarship. If you have the robertson, you will not only get duke, but a lot of other stuff too that normal duke students don’t have access to. most other scholarships from are not as encompassing other than amount of money.

If you got the robertson, definitely think about duke as a serious option, otherwise, COME TO YALE! If it is your number one school, go with your gut. Also try to parlay your scholarships for better aid at yale.

I got a full-ride scholarship to Duke as well (not the Robertson), Yale, and Princeton. I’m currently trying to develop a feasible means of deciding between the three. I have yet to learn of my financial aid from Y but P is giving me a pretty good package (7k contribution) and I assume Y’s will be comparable.

I also plan to be premed, but i’m flexible with my major. I’m leaning towards comp sci or biomed engineering with a double major in poli sci. I might try my hand in Ethics, Politics, and Economics (if I go to Yale).

My initial problem was picking a financially comfortable life @ a skool i didn’t care for over my dream schools.

What are the requirements to keep the scholarship for all 4 years?? Understand what level of commitment you have to make to maintain the scholarship…and give it very serious consideration… I think I would have complete confidence in your ability to work hard enough in college to have a shot at Yale for med school?? Debt free undergrad, followed by Yale Medical is a great plan in my book!!
