Harvard, Yale, Stanford

I know these are the toughest schools to transfer to but still...
I am already at a top liberal arts college (Williams) so it's only worth it if I get any of these three. Current sophomore.

College GPA - 3.6
SAT - 800 Math 720 Verbal
Sat II - 800, 790, 730
In high school I did alot of stuff - debating, acting, publications etc..

In college--
Won this Prize for Best PUblic Speaker
Student Senator
Debate Club and INternational students club
Yearbook editorial board.

I want to transfer so that I have more classes to chose from especially in political science (INternational Studies etc)

DO you think I have a chance at any three?
ANd oh, I was deferred at Stanford when I applied early action as a freshman...only to get rejected then !

Weird... Your other posts imply that you will be a freshman at Amherst.. Maybe you can transfer to Williams. They actually have quite a beefy PoliSci dept.

hmmm...wanting to transfer because the top 3 universities have more classes to choose from is pretty weak. There are literally thousands of colleges that have great course selections and these 3 universities know that. My understanding is universities such as Harvard, Yale, Stanford and the likes are looking for students who have the ability to "stand out" from the norm and have an impact on society. That's just my opinion though.....

don't kid yourself coming from Williams you have an excellent chance but you will need to create some more reasons

I'd research those three schools extensively and find out what else is better than Williams at those schools...

thanks brand...
what do you think qualify as good reasons?

haha good question if i'd researched those schools then i'd know, but i'm not applying to any of them. For the schools I'm interested in, I'm focusing on:

1) Student body/environment
2) Courses/majors/professors

I'll be back...gotta go.

You're at Williams...sigh...why would you ever want to leave? That's where I'm trying to transfer to next year.

dont get me wrong... williams is a fantastic school, but it's just not what i was expecting...but if it's your type, then its awesome.

Anyway, do you think transferring from a pretty good college like Williams gives me a better chance? even though my gpa is on the lowish side (3.6) ?

No offense, but I'm not really sure you're giving your school enough credit. Williams was ranked #1 this past year and is consistently considered as one of the 3 best liberal arts colleges in the nation, which basically puts you on par with Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, only you took the small school alternative. Just the name alone will give your transfer application much more weight than many people trying to get in, and if I were you I'd also focus on the fact (even if it's not true) that you don't like the small school as much and would prefer a larger student body...something to that effect.

But you got into Williams...you should be able to figure it out better than me. ;)

confused-- yes, it does help. i got into harvard with a lower gpa. i went to tufts.

you have the numbers (>3.5/ >600s), plus a 3.6 at williams is probably more difficult to get than a 4.0 most other places. its just a matter of putting together a nice application. good luck!

I am going to be a freshman at UCLA this fall, and want to transfer to Harvard...... what do they look at in a first year transfer?????????? what do i need to work on, i know i am going to do wahtever it takes to pull a 4.0 for sure.............but what else??????

in high school i had a 4.2 gpa, ranked 5th in classof 500, was in ASB, writer for school newsaper, played football, soccer, track........ volunteered at a junior high for 3 years........ also i am a Gates Millenium Scholar........ all this plus the fact that i came to US three years ago and am from a low income family.........

my negatives were my test scores, i am not a great test taker....... AP's two 3's, three 2's, two 1's. SAT math 660, writing 540, reading 510. ACT:21.........

any suggestion/advice is appreciated...................

thank guys

rejected4life you should probablly start a new post so you could get more responses.

As for my opinion, I think those terrific stats from high school. The SATs are one thing I would extremely recommend you to take, maybe even get some prep classes to help you get a higher score. You should probablly not mention your AP scores; they are relatively low. However, if you do pull of 3.8 - 4.0 at UCLA, then I think you'd have a great shot at transferring.

thanks pell man and yeah i think it would be a good idea to start a new thread.

its next to impossible to transfer to yale. 600+ people apply to transfer, but the first cut brings the pool down to 30...then to 15...from the shortlist they pick 3-4. to get on the shortlist you often have to have connections to yale through faculty, etc. it's so difficult because so few people leave.

right...yale is basically the hardest major university to transfer into.

Save it for grad school.

Its not quite that bad....3-4 out of 600? Come on...
It's about 30-50 out of about 600-800 a year. Still a small amount...

well Yale was about 4% last year...I don't know any research university that is harder to transfer into than that...I do know some LACs that are more difficult, but that makes sense.

I don't blame em...who'd wanna leave Yale?

true it's 30...still a pretty small number to cut to from 700
