Does anyone know or have experience with HMC's Student Disabilities office and services?

Also, how do learning disabilities factor into admissions?

TZK203, I sent you a private message.

intparent,

Could you pm me, too? I’m very interested in this, as well. My 2015er probably won’t be competitive enough for Mudd but he did contact admissions to talk about at least one health issue and they responded to him right away and were very encouraging and understanding. (At least in the email)

Hi I understand some of you have experience with Harvey Mudd and disabilities support. Could you lease let me know your experience. My son is applying this year and does require some support for well-documented issues.

Mmcdeb, I also sent you a private message. :)

I think most schools are pretty good at disabilities support these days. My son has attended one very large school and one fairly small one, and the office at both was fantastic. The professors are very understanding, also - every semester, they have students who require accommodations.

We definitely found some schools more accommodating than others! At one college accepted student days last spring when we asked the admissions officers checking people in where we could talk to someone about disability services during our time on campus, they tried to steer us to student housing… when I said, “No, I was actually asking about learning disabilities…”, they were completely stumped. Two adults from admissions, NO IDEA who we would talk to on campus. By the end of the day (8 hours later) they came up with an email address, but said we could not actually go see the person as they did not really have an office… This is a top 10 university, too. It was kind of crazy. And one of the main reasons D2 dropped them from consideration. This was not Mudd, though.

HMC is excellent at supporting students with disabilities. The support plans for each student are developed in concert with the Dean of Students who is fantastic. If the needs are documented as you indicated you should have no issues at HMC.

I can’t say how it factors into admissions which I see at all schools as a black-box.

I would also love to hear what others Think. The actual building/offices of the student health center are a bit of a Ways away from hm’s campus, which means the students needing help would have to travel off their own campus to get to the health services - but i’m not sure about where the Disability support offices are. Are they on the hm campus? or is that office also off campus and where the student health offices are?

intparent - If its possible, I’d also love to get the pm (if there is information that can help me about this
question.) However, I’m quite new to cc and i’m not sure of the rules for pming - I may not be allowed to make/receive private messages to other cc’ers yet :(

To answer your question about the location of the health services building, it isn’t far…everything is a 10 minute walk or less between the consortium colleges. My D dealt directly with the Dean of Student’s office at Mudd, though. She does not require any medical services, so doesn’t do anything related to her disability with the health services (she did go get a flu shot there last week, though!).
