* SAT: C680 M770 (only missed one question) W710

ACT: N/A
GPA: 3.67 UW
Rank: 9/~95

Subjective:

* Essays: Felt good, I have been told I am a gifted writer. Wrote about my extracurricular project to breed a species of fish that is extinct in the wild in the supplement essay.
Teacher Recs: Very good, important as one was from my AP lit teacher and I have struggled most with English classes through the years.
Counselor Rec: Good, I have full support from my counselor despite GPA woes.
Hook (if any): Fish project as stated above. Prospective track and field participant, I was essentially told by the head coach that if I am accepted I will have a chance to make a significant contribution to the team. Took two classes at UCSB last summer and got A’s in both.

Location/Person:

* State or Country: Washington (state, not DC ;))
School Type/Competitiveness: Very weak. Small school in the country, and very few AP and honors classes offered, although I enrolled in every one. Most students go to community college, very few go out of state let alone to “elite schools”.
Ethnicity: White/Native American
Gender: Male

Other Factors: Settled for video interview on MYCOLLEGEi, I was nervous and confused by the medium and feel like I could have done much better with more preparation or an on-campus interview.
General Comments: It is clear to me that the GPA was killer, and I have always known this was a problem. I have had issues with motivation in the past, not recognizing potential and getting discouraged by the atmosphere at my school (since I enrolled in advanced science classes my freshman through junior years, there was no class left to take as a senior, for example. I am currently taking an online class through the local community college to make up for this). However after my experience at UCSB last summer, I have been working much harder and my first semester GPA for senior year was a 4.0, while taking the hardest classes offered at my school. I can honestly say that I am learning for the sake of learning, and have developed a strong extracurricular interest in art and literature. I also decided to enroll in an extra art class this semester, although I do not need the credit and I am taking more than a full schedule of classes. This epiphany of sorts was the subject of my common app essay. I hope this is what admissions will look at when they re-evaluate my application with the regular decision candidates. Mudd is by far my first choice, although I know I will be happy with my back up plan too. Really I just want to know where I am going so I can have some certainty once and for all Congratulations to everyone that was accepted, hopefully I will be joining you next fall!

pandajack, since your GC is in your corner, ask him or her to contact your regional admissions counselor at Mudd and ask for specifics about your deferral. In the past, they’ve been pretty forthcoming about their concerns. Your GC may be able to find out what they’re hoping to see from you by the time they make their final decision in March. Good luck!

Other posters - congrats! Sorry to hijack your thread; leaving now. :D

I got my financial aid thing, but I don’t know if it included the merit scholarship or not. It just said like what I got in scholarship and what I could get in loans. I was unsure if that was just the need-based stuff or if they lumped the merit scholarship with it. It didn’t really say one way or the other…

how’s your financial aid looking aettsenoh?

I havent gotten mine yet because of some complications, but I think that financial aid does NOT consider merit aid so I think no, it shouldn’t include the Harvey S Mudd scholarship. It gives you “financial aid award”, if that makes a difference xD

I am somewhat disappointed because they got rid of the HSM Scholarship guidelines. I would have been qualified had they kept them.

gary7: If I understood you correctly, we (applicants) don’t get to apply for aid. Mudd is not cheap and I know some CC posters who would want as much as possible. I don’t know whether answered your question or not. I wish I could just say “Hey Mudd please give me _____k”. lol

Maruhan: :3 Yeah, our school isn’t as competitive as yours… and I know that’s going to be a disadvantage but I’m willing to risk it.
