Microsoft named a college president and computer-science professor as its 10th board member Monday.

The board also declared a regular quarterly dividend of 13 cents a share, up from 11 cents in the same period a year ago.

Maria Klawe, president of Harvey Mudd College, in Claremont, Calif., and a decorated computer scientist and mathematician, joined Chairman Bill Gates, Chief Executive Steve Ballmer and seven others on Microsoft's board of directors. Gates and Ballmer praised her technical acumen.

Her appointment restores the board to 10 members after Jon Shirley, a former Microsoft president and director since 1984, stepped down in November.
