Harvey Mudd ED II + RD Class of 2022 Discussion Thread

On the tuition question, It is simple math: Mudd is like most private “need blind” schools. As more and more scholarships/institutional financial aid is offered, tuition rises and pay students are forced to subsidize that increased scholarships/financial aid. Educational socialism at work. Imagine a university that did not practice educational socialism. What would the tuition be?

@intparent Yeah… I just had this weird idea that at some point the cost would stabilize and start rising proportionally to inflation…

Has anyone received their financial aid award yet? Still haven’t heard back yet

@chrisb15 Me neither. Glad I’m not the only one.

@chimilk Correct, I ED1’ed to Mudd.

Nice! Tho I didn’t get in, maybe I’ll see you around the Claremont schools if I choose to go to one of them!

Does anybody know if the financial aid award is sent by regular mail or if it is uploaded to the online hub? Has anybody received it yet?

@84stag How did you get rejected? And from SLO?

@Auracle Harvey Mudd is a crapshoot. So I wasn’t surprised by that, but still disappointed. I worked really hard on the applications, including this one. But they bounced 4.0/35ACT applicants, so there’s no shame in getting rejected.

As for SLO, your guess is as good as mine. I also had in-state status. Makes no sense. It was my last choice and a safety. Thankfully there are other great choices. UVA just said “yes” BTW.

@84stag I’m glad to hear that! I hope your college years go well

@Auracle Thanks and same to you. :)>-

My child is in the same situation as to UC/SLO. Child attends a very competitive private high school. Pushed forward taking the hardest level of classes—some of which had 2-5 students due to their difficulty. During sophomore and junior year, got 5 B+’s in a language AP and a humanities AP and an honors STEM class. The result of these B’s is denial at UCLA and waitlist at 2 other UC’s and SLO. Child got 1550 SAT, very high SAT II scores, scores of 5 on multiple AP exams, and is now getting very high A’s in multivariable calculus, AP physics, and AP stats during senior year. From a UC perspective, my child would have been better off taking easier courses sophomore and junior years. Child is on waitlist for HMC and perhaps he/she gets in. (Fingers crossed). But, there is something very, very broken with the UC system when these types of students are not admitted to the top UC’s.

Is the financial aid for regular decision out?

@2022hkcparent We received our award yesterday. It was posted on the portal.

Do you get an email from them? The portal has some updated message, but I cannot find any award letter. Thanks

No e-mail. I called and they said they were able to sent the award by mail and that once mailed it will also be posted on the portal. I believe they are sending them in waves, so hopefully you get yours at some point next week if no sooner.

After all the college decisions, I have basically decided to go to Harvey Mudd

Here are my reasons:
(1) It is is California. You can’t argue with the weather
(2) Significant financial aid which made the college cost less than UC Berkeley for me (for those still looking, go to the HMC@financial aid portal, and click the 3 bars in the upper left, and click “award.” That is where I found mine)
(3) Compared to other schools, there is more leeway to focus on a well-rounded education (I’m not 100% sure on my major yet)
(4) Apparently, the school pays back later and is a good investment
(5) Great undergraduate support
(6) Arthur Benjamin
(7) Pomona
(8) I heard it was fun

Accepted: Berkeley-EECS, UCLA (and most other UCs), Vanderbilt

Long ago, the number 1 reason why people did not choose HMC is because of the gender inequality. Now, both genders are admitted equally. The school’s prestige seems to be growing over time, and I would not be surprised if people start grouping Harvey Mudd with Harvard, MIT, Yale, Stanford, Caltech.

Anyways, that is my 2 cents. I hope that all of you that are admitted can afford to attend

(btw, did anyone figure out why Mg5Al(OH)8(AlSi3O10) means Harvey?)

It doesn’t mean Harvey…it means Mudd (or mud…)
