I've been accepted to both of these great schools and I'm wondering if anyone could give any feedbacks. FA seems to be good from Cornell and although I haven't received one from Harvey Mudd, I was also accepted to Claremont McKenna and their FA seems as good so I'm guessing Harvey Mudd's would be about the same... I haven't visited either but planning to visit HMC over spring break. I've always wanted to go to California and I think I would like the undergrad focus so I'm leaning towards HMC at the moment but I just wanted to hear other people's inputs on these two colleges if I want to go into Computer Science. I heard HMC is very strong in engineering but not sure if that includes CS.

I’d also be interested in people’s thoughts

HMC is one of the best school for Computer Science in the nation IMO. It will get you immediate recognition especially in silicon valley, and the program rigor and strength is almost unmatched. I have heard nothing but amazing things about HMC. I applied there and got rejected (expected) but I specifically researched the school and CS department a lot, and found nothing but great things. If you visit and like it, I think it is a great choice.

Thanks and sorry to hear that you were rejected. I’m really hoping that I will like the college as I’ve only heard positive things about it as well. But I was just wondering because I only read about engineering and Harvey Mudd and nothing about its computer science program other than the recent efforts by the President to increase the gender balance in the student body and getting more women in the field of computer science.

Love Mudd!

Cook link, I’m stealing it! I think you will have to decide what sort of experience you want, because you will get as strong a program as you want either way. Remember this is undergraduate college, not grad school, so don’t pick it the way you would a grad school.

I think Harvey Mudd, I read somewhere it’s best education in USA!

<a href=“Which College—and Which Major—Will Make You Richest? - The Atlantic”>Which College—and Which Major—Will Make You Richest? - The Atlantic;

If we’re just talking about the quality of the education then definitely Harvey Mudd. It’s an amazing school that is very highly regarded for math and science. The education should definitely be the main factor in your choice but I mean there are still other things to consider. Claremont is a small suburb that is beautiful but I can’t say it’s very lively. I don’t know too much about Ithaca except that it’s also secluded but with huge college life. I visited Harvey Mudd, attended a class, and ate in their dining hall. It’s very small and kind of felt like a high school that you live at. For me it’s not exactly an exciting place to be and the campus isn’t that nice. But there’s a certain type of person that it’s perfect for and that could definitely be you I don’t know. Cornell is large and gorgeous with so many events and activities. But then again it’s far from anywhere else and the weather is bad. Obviously stuff like that shouldn’t be the deciding factor and I still believe HMC has a superior program but I hope I helped you get a feel for what they are like. As for myself, I got accepted to Cornell and I’m on the alternate list at HMC.

Thanks for the inputs guys. I’ve already seen all those links but just wanted to see if anyone had first hand experiences to share.

@loveandmayhem I would probably like a nice quite suburb Good luck with getting into HMC!

@jashbela just found this. If you look http://www.payscale.com/data-packages/college-roi-2013/college-roi-2013-schools-by-major/computer-science, harvey mudd isn’t on the list. I think all those articles that listed Harvey Mudd as number one is just showing the ROI rankings for engineering majors which is apparently different from computer science.

Thanks, very interesting @tetutato

what are the costs to you of each school? for HMC, use the npc estimate. They are both great schools. Let’s see the price difference.

I should have the actual FA from Harvey Mudd tomorrow so I’ll just post an update here then.

Cornell will cost the following for my family:

Students Contribution
$2,650.00
Parents Contribution
$7,100.00

While HMC is definitely an outstanding school, the current Dean is turning away excellent male applicants in order to increase the enrollment of females. This is discrimination.
