Hi everyone, I'm an international student and I have received all my decisions. I'm now stuck in these three schools:

1 Harvey Mudd with $10,000 per year
2 UCB College of Engineering with $2,400 per year, personal faculty sponsor, research support, priority registration & guaranteed housing (thanks to the Regents and Chancellors Scholarship)
3 Lafayette with $19,000 grant per year

I haven't decided what to learn yet, but probably CS or engineering or other science majors...

Also, money is a concern.

Thanks CCers!

If money is a concern, you can help others help you by listing the net price of each school after deducting scholarships and grants from the list price.

harvey mudd has the best engineering program. since you are an int’l student, would its COA more or less than Berkeley?

^ Harvey Mudd engineering is not better than Berkeley engineering. Both are stellar and hard to compare, and I would not claim one is better than the other.

I would choose either UCB or Harvey Mudd. Now it comes down to what learning style and focus you want. Harvey Mudd will be general engineering with a liberal arts and academic focus. Harvey Mudd is an extraordinary school on par with the top institutions in the country. Your education will be the main focus of the professors and Mudders boast of getting some of the highest starting salaries in industry. However, even with $10,000 a year your out of pocket cost could be as high as $40-$45K annually. You will graduate in 4 years. It is located outside of Los Angeles in a suburban area. It is part of the Claremont Consortium that include Claremont McKenna College, Pitzer College, Pomona College and Scripps College. Of all the Claremont campuses, we found Harvey Mudd to be the least attractive. It hardly matters as Pomona College is gorgeous and located within walking distance.

UCB on the other hand, is a world class research institution with global recognition. Located farther north you have SF, and the Bay Area in your backyard. As an international student you will probably get more instant recognition with this school back in your home country than the other choices. UCB could be an amazing option as well. If all they gave you was $2,400 a year, paying international student tuition could be very costly. Exactly what did they offer you? I can’t imagine the Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarships being only $2,400 combined. I’ve never been to the campus, but I hear that it is beautiful. The surrounding urban area is rumored to be a bit seedy.

I know nothing about Lafayette other than a general recognition that it is a good school located out of my area.

If money were no object, I would base my choice on teaching methodology and cultural fit. Any chance of being able to visit the schools? If you did already, what was your gut feeling?

Harvey Mudd if you want a smaller learning environment with more care and feeding, however that’s negated mostly by your Berkeley scholarships. Cal’s location, IMO, has much more going on for an international student to enjoy (i.e. San Francisco, easy access to SFO via BART, world class International House) than HMC.

Congrats on your acceptances!

Hi everyone, I forgot to mention that my auntie lives in Gardena, LA. So I can have someone to ask for help once I meet some emergency situations… I’ll probably goto HMC, for these school’s COA are almost the same and I prefer small & quiet places.
Thanks to all of you!! :)

HMC is a good choice. You will go far with that school. Interesting, Gardena is right next door to where I live. It is about 35-40 miles away from campus.

@OsakaDad Yes that’s exactly the point. Also, I want to challenge myself by taking the heavy load XDD. So, yeah, HMC is the perfect place for me`
