My son is looking to apply to CU in the fall. He has focused his efforts on Math and programming classes and has not met the MAPS standard for sciences. Specifically he has not taken Physics or Chemistry. In addition to that, his 3 years of language are with two different languages so he did not reach level 3 in either of them.
His other stats.
UW GPA - 3.9
W GPA - 4.1
AP Classes - 4 taken (3, 4, 4, 5), 2 scheduled
SAT Test - 1 sitting (690 Math, 770 Reading)
He is considering not applying because of MAPS.
Note that in the catalog, it states that the standards are not requirements, but they are evaluated by “the extent to which the” minimum academic preperation standards (MAPS) have been met."
I got accepted into engineering with only 2 years of foreign language (in one language). If he’s doing a CS BS or applied math degree, then 2 years in 2 separate languages will fulfill the requirement for the college of engineering (arts & sciences will require 3 years in HS or 3 semesters in college in one language).
My GPA was lower, I took less AP classes, and our SAT scores are about the same (though mine was the old format). I’ve heard that they are getting more selective than when I applied in fall 2014, but I’d still be surprised if he couldn’t get in.
The foreign language thing is easy to work around for admissions, but he may be required to take it for his degree. I don’t think there is a requirement specifically for Chem or Physics, just for 3-4 science classes and chem and physics are recommended.
If he is applying specifically to engineering, it might be a problem. If he’s applying to A&S, they’ll just make him take those courses to get a BA.
