Has anyone attended admitted students day?

I will be taking my daughter down for the Mon., April 20th session, and I was wondering what to expect. She took a tour about a year ago, but she hasn't visited since. It will be my first visit to campus. Did you find the day to be helpful? My daughter is still undecided about her college choice, so I hope this will help her make a decision.

Thanks!

Hi, I am a fellow student of JMU. I did not attend this event, but however I believe it will be a great experience. These events typically allow you to learn more about the school in terms of academics, extracurriculars, and give you a glimpse into the community.

I highly recommend asking several questions regarding the program she is entering, what types of clubs she should seek out, and what stores are in the area/what kind of things are there to do when one is not studying.

In addition to that, I would recommend asking about what typically JMU students are doing in “whatever major” in terms of job hunt, or internship hunting. This is even more important now-a-days since the job market has been hurting.

Aside from that, I am always happy to answer any questions that you might have.

Yes you should def go. This day was great for me and made my descion to attend jmu. It was a lot of fun and gave me a great feel for the campus and the school

yes!! go!!
as soon as i came back from choices, i sent in my deposit and turned down all the other schools i got into… that’s how awesome it was :)

Can anyone provide some details?

I’ll be there Monday. Hopefully it helps me finally pick between JMU and NYU.

What exactly is the Student Services Fair?

I went there today, it was absolutely great. I highly recommend everyone to go.

roxlo…I am taking my daughter to admitted students day on Monday. Too bad we didn’t go today when the weather was beautiful. It is supposed to rain on Monday. Regardless, she is excited to see campus again. Can you tell me what the days activities were? Have you decided to attend JMU?

Thanks!

I came late (around 10:30) so I missed the residence life presentation and some concerts (both are on youtube, search jmu residence life).

The rest of the day consisted of campus tours and presentations from specific departments. I chose to see the biology and pre-professional presentations; they provided basic info. about what it takes to succeed and took questions that anyone had.

Unless I magically get unwaitlisted from WM, then I will be attending JMU.

Daughter is in same position, roxlo…waitlisted at WM and right now, JMU looks to be top choice. Her number one school turned out to be more of a nightmare than dream school. We’ll save a ton of money if she stays in state. Heading to choices on Monday as well.

CHOICES was a great program and bumped JMU from number 4 on my list to number 1!

When you first get there, you are greeted with a bunch of really enthusiastic JMU students who really are a lot of fun. The opening presentations are great! We heard from two of the a capella groups which were awesome and we also listened to a few speeches and had a presentation of the residance life.

The first session I attended was the business session and it was really informative. I was able to learn alot about the college of business and their expectaions. The next session I attended was the study abroad session which was also really informative. I highly recommend that you go to sessions that have to do with your major and things that interest you! They really do give you a lot of valuable information!

After those, my parents and I decided to take campus tours. Our tour guide was very enthusiastic and had a lot of cool facts about the university. The west side of campus is absolutely gorgeous! We loved it. The east (the newer part of campus) is also really nice! I loved the UREC center. It was huge and made me excited to work out there next year! It may seem that the east part of campus is really far from the west, but honestly it was only about a 15 minute walk and their are shuttles if you don’t feel like walking.

After that, we ate at one of the dining halls and the food was actually really good! I learned that JMU is ranked 5th in the nation for best campus food which is always a plus! Haha :)

I highly recommend you take tours of open residence halls! We saw two, Hillcrest and one in Blue stone and they were both really nice! Some current students opened up their dorms for people to see and it gives you a good idea of how to set up your dorm room! We were also able to go onto greek row and see a couple of the sorority houses and they are very nice and right next to lake!

My last note is about the friendliness of the campus. The students their are warm, friendly, active, and very social. While my parents were walking around campus looking for places to go, we found many students who were eager to answer questions and offer their assistance when needed. It gave me a very nice homelike feeling. Everyone at JMU is seriously one big family.

I think CHOICES sealed the deal for me. I am ready to attend JMU in the fall :)

I hope you guys have a great visit! I really enjoyed my time!

tilohnine…what are your other options for college? What was number one prior to attending choices?

I was in a position very similar to tilohnine. I had two schools that I was torn over, JMU and WM. After attending both admitted students days, JMUs was BY FAR the better.

What really makes JMU special is the people. Everyone is happy and excited to be there, and not just because it’s admitted students day. When I did an overnight there, everyone was extremely friendly to me and offered to answer any questions I had.

During my Choices session back in February, we had many people offer to help us find a place to eat. One student even walked with us to a dining hall, showed us around inside, and answered any questions we had.

As soon as I came back from WM’s admitted students open house, I sent in my money for JMU. To put it short, JMU is a top notch school with top notch people.

Taysel got it exactly right, the people there are always friendly. I remember when my friend and I visited once, we were looking for my friends dorm and wandering aimlessly around campus. A friendly student approached, asked us what we were looking for, and took us straight to the dorm. It’s just the kind of people there. Always friendly, and always willing to give a hand. I love ittt

BlueHen, sorry today’s weather wasn’t better for JMU Choices Day but I hope you found it informative and helpful nonetheless. JMU could not have scripted a better day weatherwise last Friday. (I’d be curious to know how many attended today’s Choices; JMU officials were expecting more than 3,000 attendees last Friday.) We had already sent in our deposit for my son before going down there, so we were not among those still trying to decide which school to attend. Going down there for Choices only strengthened my son’s (and his parents!) enthusiasm for going there as part of the Class of 2013. During lunch he said “do I have to go back home with you guys?” The icing on the cake for him was finding out that the Marching Band (of which he will be a member) will be performing at the London New Year’s Day Parade on 1/1/11, with a side trip to Paris. He has to get through 1.5 years of school first, but what a trip that will be! If you want to see how many kids were influenced positively by Choices, go to the Facebook group for James Madison University class of 2013 and see the wall posts. Let us know what your daughter decides!
