Just wondering if this has happened to people.

BTW, this is the same thread posted in the main College Admissions forum, but I realized that very few people there would care about UChicago. My apologies for any annoyances, etc.

I was accepted to UChicago, but deferred from Columbia.

I don't think it's that uncommon since Chicago is a bit easier to get into than the Ivies except for maybe Cornell.

I think it happens all the time -- however, it's also possible that UChicago rejects some students that get into Ivies because they are looking for a specific type of student. My daughter is a freshman at UChicago and she was accepted everywhere she applied -- including NYU, WUSTL, Emory, Davidson and UNC Chapel Hill (out of state) -- EXCEPT for one school: Princeton. Good thing UChicago was her first choice!

I haven't been rejected from any Ivies. Then again, I only applied to 2 schools : U of Illinois UC, and U of C. :)

a friend of mine that's a math major at columbia right now got deferred from chicago early action but accepted to columbia regular decision (he hadn't even applied ed). i know that's an anomaly, but it proves that chicago isnt just a backup to the ivies.

It happens A LOT. But, for the few cases where a kid gets a shove from Chicago but gets a welcome from the Ivies...those kids are just not the type of "material" Chicago looks for. I think every school, more than anything, searches for their "type" of kid, and sometimes, the type of kid perfect for Princeton might be a "heck no" for Chicago. But, most of the time, let me generalize, Chicago usually accepts all the kids the ivies accept, but the ivies do not accept all the kids CHicago accepts...because, you know, they are STILL the ivies...with the exception of Cornell...which might be on par or even easier to get into in terms of selectivity.

My case: In at Penn Huntsman and In at Chicago.

"...but I realized that very few people there would care about UChicago."

Are you kidding? U of C is on of the absolute best schools in the Country. Actually, I do agree with you a bit. It seems as though Chicago doesnt get its due respect on this site. It is still better than most Ivy League schools though. And I am from California, born and raised and educated (UCLA and USC), so I am not bias one bit.

I'm surprised that UChicago doesn't get much attention around CC and certain parts of the country. Here at my school, at least, most people confuse it as another Ivy League school. One of my college counselor's most frequent quotes is "UChicago is Ivy League caliber, but not Ivy League!"

I def. agree. It offers one of the best undergraduate educations...it's solid, to the core, and distinctively Chicago.

I think that many people don't put U of C in the same pedistal as the Ivies/Stanford/MIT becaues it is simply not as difficult to get in to (higher admission rates than the easiest Ivy, Cornell). However when it comes to acedemics many people agree that it is on the same lever, if not harder (no grade inflation, but highest undergrad->grad school rates in the country) than some of the Ivies.

Why should how hard it is to get into matter?

I can only see it mattering as far as bragging rights if the education itself is equal.

And Harvard only gets its pool because it is Harvard. There is no way that it can be the "right" school for 20,000 people...chicago applicants just know better because they arent buying into a name

ottothecow, I agree. I personally think that selectivity only plays a small role in a person's education. I think being taught by the most distinguished faculty and having the most resources available to you are the most important variables when determining the quality of an education. Then again, some people prefer other things. Much of it has to do with individual "fit." University of Chicago is awesome though and it DOES carry the "name." Excuse my ignorance because I never visit this area of CC but do you go there?

a student from my school turned down Dartmouth and Columbia university for Chicago.

We must remember that UChicago's acceptance rate is higher because it has a smaller applicant pool, plus most of the applicants are already high-achieving and quality students. There really aren't any not-so-serious applicants to UChicago. Most people who would apply to an Ivy League school "just for the heck of it" won't bother with UChicago mainly because of the essay questions. After all, they are "uncommon".

....just my 2 cents
