I called admissions today and a counselor said if an engineering freshman is denied from both their first and second choice majors they are automatically considered for the division of general studies. Has this happened to anyone you know? In all of the previous decisions threads, when people are denied from both engineering majors they seem pretty bummed (I would be too) but I haven’t seen anyone mention that despite both denials, they were accepted to the Division of General Studies.
Honestly, even if I don’t get into my first or second choice majors I would still attend UIUC as a DGS student with hopes to eventually transfer in to the College of Engineering. If someone can confirm that they were denied entry to their first and second choice majors but then accepted into DGS I would be more than happy. I need to keep my hopes alive!
Not sure, but my D was accepted into engineering from LAS. She thought she wanted to be an Anthropologist, changed her mind. She has a 4.0 and had zero issue transferring to engineering. I guess some engineering students drop out or switch to other majors making spots available.
A large chunk of DGS students are first choice ENG and BUS applicants.
Look at the stats for accepted students; DGS ACT medians of 26/31 is higher than that of ACES, AHS, EDU, FAA, Media, and SSW. It is only slightly lower than that of LAS.
25% of DGS students are 31+ on the ACT and 25% are near the top of their high school class. It’s not hard to figure out what the first choice college is for most of these applicants.
Transferring out of DGS is a competitive process depending on intended major, and it is always conditional on available space. Do your research and ask the school for data on success rates moving out of DGS into your specific intended major.
