I feel pretty stupid, today I actaully missed my first class of the semester. First of all its wierd that the first day of class was a Tuesday and not a Monday. When I checked my schedule as I got ready in the morning I read it as I had another class first on main campus and then my other class off campus. I get to campus and find out that I screwed up and that its actaully the other way around and the class I thought I was going to had gotten canceled because it was only the first week. By the time I realized my mistake it was too late and id already missed class. I felt so bad that I emailed the professor just saying that I had a scheduling mix up and was sorry that i missed class but will be present at the next class period. The professor was at least nice enough to email me back but she didn’t send a syllabus she just said she looks forward to seeing me in class. I hope that no real work was assigned and that she just read over the syllabus. Plus it’s still drop add week so professors really can’t assign a lot of work in case someone registers or drops out of the class, hopefully. I still feel bad and feel like my semester is off to a crappy start. I’m a sophomore in my spring semester and this is the first time I’ve screwed up and missed a class for reasons other than being sick of traveling with a school team. Will missing the first day not screw me up? Has anyone else made a mistake that makes them miss class?
You missed a class. One class. Calm down.
Go to your average 8AM course and you’ll probably find that 30% of the students are missing since they slept in.
By the way, I use a calendar app to alert me when and where each of my courses are. I get an alert 15 minutes before each class begins, and thus am rarely late. You should have something like that.
Much better to miss the first day than the last. I mistyped the date of my Game Theory final which was rescheduled to the 2nd to last class of the semester (the last official day being removed) and missed it. I was allowed to take the exam on my own in the professor’s office but it was definitely not a pleasant experience. A first day absence isn’t a big deal for most professors, just get the notes and anything you might need from a classmate.
I’ve missed a class here and there throughout college, and I’m going to be a graduating senior after this semester. A lot of people may have to miss an occasional class and it’s no big deal. As long as you don’t make it a habit, it’s not a big deal.
However, there are times when missing the first few classes will be a big deal. If the class has a waitlist, they can drop you for nonattendance to make room for somebody on the waitlist.
I agree that if attendance is not mandatory, you will likely find that only about 30% of those enrolled in an 8AM lecture will show up. Even 9AM lectures don’t get that much better.
Are you a freshman? probably just missed syllabus day lol
I’ve missed class on accident occasionally. Usually it’s due to oversleeping lol but my professors are usually pretty understanding that stuff happens. I’ve never missed a class in the first week, however, except when I took a CC course over the summer in high school. I missed the first day of my CS class that summer because I signed up for one course, went to it, and realized it was way to easy. So I switched to a higher level class (took a couple days to process). It was the same professor, though, so it wasn’t a problem.
It should be fine! I’ve missed class more than a couple of times. Just ask for the syllabus the next time you go to class. Since it is still add/drop period, there are bound to be other people who were not at the first class anyway. More likely than not, it will not be a big deal
