UC San Diego is better than San Diego State University. Which made me think when San Diego state changed their title to university, why didn't it become the University of San Diego, because there already was a USD, and then if it became apart of the UC system, it couldn't because there is already a UC San Diego. So for the most part, it seems SDSU got screwed on a name basis, heh.

really?? i always got the impression that the university of minnesota-twin cities was the most prestigious university in minnesota... i could be wrong though as i'm not very familiar w/ minnesota, it's just what i've heard.

But ultimately, you receive an education from both universities, whether it be a (insert state) State University or a University of (insert state). In both cases, students typically read the same books and cover the same material; except for name recognition and funding, I'm not sure we can differentiate too much.

Anyone who disagrees, feel free to correct me on any incorrect statements I may have made.

Upenn vs. PSU

At San Diego State we don't have books. Nor do we have professors. But I hear at UCSD they use books and have professors, amazing.

ohio state university is better AND more prestigous than ohio university

ohio state university is better AND more prestigous than ohio university

but I think this is a trick question ... isn't "ohio university" a private school and not a state school ... so this is a unique situation

ohio university is public. http://dir.yahoo.com/regional/u_s__states/ohio/education/college_and_university/public/

commack543, I was about to tell you that it's UNC-Asheville, and it's been named one of the best small liberal arts public schools in the country, and then I Googled UNC-Asheboro, and there it was! I've taught for UNCA and didn't even know the other UNCA existed! So you're certainly right about its being less prestigious than UNC-CH--or UNCA, for that matter!

Ohio State may be better at football than OU but I certainly wouldn't say it's more prestigious. And even if it is, this thread is about the schools being better, not more prestigious.

Ohio University isn't University of Ohio... so it does not apply. OHIO does not have a "university of ohio" therefore.. it gives room for The Ohio State University to be just as prestigious as a "university of _______"

and by the way The Ohio State University is regarded as a better/more prestigious university.. it is both harder to get into and constantly ranks higher. but i guess it's a personal preferance.. we can argue about this forever, i'm just stating the FACTS not my opinion.

ohio university is public. http://dir.yahoo.com/regional/u_s__...versity/public/

whoops ... learn something new every day ... thanks Chelsea. Rattling in my brain is that one of the "state" universities is a private school.

Yes, I think it has more name recogniton (Ohio state) = more prestige. And better is such a subjective word. Ohio state is one of only 62 colleges that offer my prospective major, but i'm from columbus, so I'm more biased.

btw I won the ohio state martin luther king junior scholar award today go me

I don't know about this, but looking at the selectivity rating at Princeton Review:
University or Oregon > Oregon State University

I forgive you 3togo! :) My point is, if you look at statistics, Ohio State is a better school than Ohio University. I'm from Ohio, so I have some pretty good insight on college admissions in Ohio.

Rutgers, THE State University of NJ is akin to a public ivy and very high ranked....sorry to disappoint you, FL advocate

in california, the cal states arent meant to be better than the UCs. because california has a layered college system, the top students tend to go to the UCs and the mediocre ones to the cal states. the cal states are meant to be the "production line" in that they prepare people for jobs after 4-years of study. the UCs on the other hand, might prepare some for jobs, but they also prepare many of the students for graduate and professional school. also, the UCs are research universities, thats why theyre more famous.

FSU isn't the best in Florida.. the most prestigous university in florida is the universty of florida.. people in florida are very proud of UF and you are very well looked upon if you are going to attend that school. also.. UF ranked #50 in US News while FSU ranked something like 100. That would be great if FSU was the best though, as i am planning to attend in the fall.. but unfortunately it's not. UF gets much more funding from the state, the smartest students in Florida, etc.. grr.

also.. rutgers, THE state university of NJ is a very great school indeed, but there is no University of NJ.. therefore, rutgers can be the most prestigious.

Celebrain,
Congratulations! Are you going to go to OSU?

U of Virginia > Virginia State Univeristy
