Has anyone ever graduated in 3 or 3 1/2 years?

For people who have matriculated with AP/IB credit, how difficult would it be to graduate in 3 years? Were you able to apply ALL of your credits towards your Bachelor's degree? I'm a rising freshman in Gallatin with 24 credits and possibly the maximum of 32 (waiting for scores in July). Most of my classes will be Computer Science and I have no credits related to that field, so could I theoretically apply all 24-32 credits towards the 128 required for graduation? I'd love to shave off an entire year to save money, but I'm wondering how feasible that'll be. Especially with the colloquium requirement and senior project and all that.

Forgot to add: Note the title question was directed to CCers (of course people have graduated from NYU in 3 years :P). Also, I see that I could graduate in 2 1/2 years by taking 18 credits a semester, plus internship/summer courses. Anyone want to weigh in on this as well?

D can graduate in 3.5 years without a problem. She is Tisch Drama. Only had 8 points of Gen Ed credit that was received by AP tests and only started taking 18 points 2nd semester of sophomore year. May or may not use the option depending on internships and whether she can get all the requirements for her Dance minor fulfilled. It seems like with some AP credits, many students could graduate at least a semester early.

Thanks for responding, writestuff54! How did she handle taking 18 credits a semester? If I do this I’d be able to graduate in 2 1/2 years, but I don’t want the workload to ruin my college career :P

Jim - she handled it fine - it was a dance class - this year Tisch added a dance minor with Open Arts classes. That last 2 hours was a breeze compared to the rest of her studio/academic schedule! Ended with a 3.6 something, which is awesome given the difficulty of her studio.

my mom did but that was a long time ago

Our DD did it in 2 1/2 years (Gallatin -> CAS) with nearly one year of AP credits and taking two full summer schedules.

Lots of students who matriculate with significant AP/IB credits are able to graduate a semester, or even a full year, early.

My daughter entered NYU CAS with 24 AP credits and graduated a year early with a double major and a minor, but she also took 18 credits of summer classes to help accomplish that. She ended up with a total of 140 credits. She really got lucky in that three of her AP’s not only counted as general education credits, they actually fulfilled specific major requirements. It also helped that she knew from day one what she would be double majoring in, so each semester she was able to craft a schedule that advanced her progress toward completion of her majors and MAP requirements, with no “filler” courses.

Needless to say, you have to be really organized and know the requirements for your majors/minors inside out. It also helps to establish a good working relationship with the administrator of your department(s) and clear your class choices with him/her before registering each semester so there are no unpleasant surprises at the finish line. You won’t be able to “explore” the curriculum or change your major, but at NYU prices that is a small sacrifice.
