I wanted to start a post about wait lists, and what type of feedback you have had, or if you or someone you know has had a wait list spot open up.

I'll start by saying that I've heard Middlesex and Hotchkiss have both indicated that they will be going to their wait list. Anyone else?

Last year you had mentioned that there were two different wait lists for Andover, based on the letters the students you work with had received. One version of the letter indicated that there was a top 25 in the wait list. Are you aware of 2 different types of wait list letters for this year or did everybody get the same?

Yes, I did mention the two different Andover wait lists last year. I believe that Andover claimed to have a top 25 wait list, but it actually had a lot more kids than that on it, since I knew personally or knew of more than 10 kids on this list, all from one state. This year, I have not seen a letter like that. I've just seen the regular wait list letter.

As for the other questions: muffinqueen, yes people often do know before APril 10th. Schools will sometimes go to the wait list in late March---they can get an early read on their yield. Second, if they don't actually go to the wait list early, sometimes they know they will have to and will tell leading candidates onthe wait list that they have a good chance. You asked how I know about those schools going to the wait list, and the answer is that the admissions officers told me. I'm hoping that other people who have had news from admissions on this will post here---it's helpful. thanks

With all due respect, we are running the risk of engaging in wild speculation on this thread! Because so many people are anxious, information is being parsed and taken out of context. Just my $.02.

My friend just heard on Tuesday that she got into Brooks from the wait list. I know that Brooks is not a school often discussed here on CC but it shows that there is movement somewhere =)

pan, my post is asking for facts rather than speculation. It's helpful to people to hear if a waitlist has started moving, so that they can move on or commit other schools. Of course, they wouldn't make that decision based only on anonymous posts, but it is a helpful start.

I know of one off the st mark's wait list today...

I was talking to a college counselor (she has a lot of connections and is well-ranked) who is a family friend. She was saying that this year, money will be a big issue for several families, and they may not be able to afford to go, unfortunately, even though they might have been able to back in December. She was talking to several (college) deans, and they plan on going deep into their waitlists. Do you think this applies to prep schools, such as Deerfield, as well?

My son took himself of the Middlesex wait list yesterday. Good luck!

Yes LOLLI you can be assured that a few at least got in FP and now can't swing it to follow through. They will be applying late for FA and who knows if the schools anticipated this. We on CC did, and discussed it months ago.
Also, watch next year as 2nd year FP students won't be able to swing their 2nd year FP. They will apply for FA. I wonder what that will do with the $$ for 1st year FA students next March 10,2010. As discussed earlier on CC.

any other news here? My son is saying no thank you to Williston tomorrow. VERY tough choice - Williston has my vote as the "sleeper" school. A very nice place.

I read somewhere that Middlesex had about 30? 25? (forgot the exact number, but somewhere around there) students on its wait list.

I took myself off of the Deerfield, Exeter, Middlesex, Milton, Choate, and Hotchkiss waitlists. Good luck to all of you who are waiting for waitlist movements! But I will tell you that the schools will most likely email (or mail) you about the waitlist on April 10.

Our son is on the WL at Deerfield and we havent heard anything. We would need FA though so that may knock us out anyways. Ditto NMH. We got a full admit there but no aid so that wasnt going to be happening at 47k a year.

At this point I've clamed down about the whole thing. Our High School here in town is one of the top 20 rated HS's in the country so I dont really care any more. If we get into Deerfield off the list with some $ aid, then okay. If not, so be it.

One other thing if I may. I know from listening to my friends in Boston that kids get plucked from the ISL school waitlists as late as August so in the words of Winston Churchil, never give up.
