For those who have been confused, you -cannot- get paid for donating blood, specifically. Donating plasma, however, -can- pay.

I sold plasma for one semester when my course load made it near impossible to work two jobs. The plasma center was always packed with students. It does take longer than giving whole blood, because you get your cells back, less plasma. I think that some kids with certain blood types received more $$, because of the antibodies in the plasma.

Yeah, if you have any sort of medical problem you can usually get into some type of study. You get paid for every visit and you get free medication related to your problem.

Those egg doner things are really invasive though. It crossed my mind for 2 seconds before I realized how much internal prodding and poking and stuff they do to you.

Plus I have curly hair, so I think I'm an undesirable candidate.

Yeah, I imagine it'd be pretty uncomfortable. And what struck me at the time was that the woman on the poster had straight blonde hair and light blue eyes. I don't think I'd be a very good candidate, either.

I think about as far as I'd ever go is donating blood.

I've even seen a poster on campus advertising services where women sell their eggs for money

I've actually thought about that. I was on Craigs List the other day and there was a site advertising selling eggs for between $7,000 - $11,000 depending on the donor's stats, I assume.

It's certainly tempting, but I don't think it's something I could emotionally handle for various reasons.

If you're a minority, donating an egg can be quite lucrative (up to 10 or 12K), but you need to be very healthy, have very healthy parents and grandparents, and be willing to take high dose hormones, abstain from sex for up to 10 months, and undergo surgical procedures.

My high school held blood drives once a month. The local blood donation organization has a once per month donation limit on whole blood, so the school would actually try to bring in the trucks THE DAY everyone would be eligible to donate again. They would even bring the plasma machines, encouraging students with the blood types they wanted to donate plasma. I have O type blood, which means it can go to anyone, so they wanted me to donate plasma, but they ran out of time and I donated whole instead. Because of all the horrific plasma selling/donating accounts here, I'm almost glad they did.

Donating blood/plasma probably isn't bad for you, but if you're a athlete (especially endurance), you probably shouldn't do it, as it can mess with training.

There are less minorities (in the US) willing to donate, as compared to Caucasians. At least, that's what I've been told. I know for my ethnicity, there's a huge demand right now.

I wouldn't do it, because I'm a little freaked out about the long term effects of all those hormones.
