teddyh, Congrats, did you get something in the mail or on the portal? If it came in the mail, was it with your acceptance or separate? Thanks
@Felice1112 i got an acceptance on the portal. And i got the honors college/scholarship info in the mail
@teddyh Thank you. I guess we will hope there is more mail to come!
Here’s a fun update. Got 2 pieces of mail from UCONN yesterday. I was excited because one was from Financial Aid, hoping for even a small amount of money. NO, it was notifying my daughter that since she is a Music Major, she will have to PAY an extra $500 PER semester! Wow, that was disappointing.
The other letter is an invitation to apply to live in a “Learning Community”. Anyone have any experience or feedback with that?
Latest update. Just on a whim checked the UCONN portal for Financial Aid and it was available! I am hoping others check and can update what they are getting. We got a Pell Grant of $2770 (Per YEAR), and University Grant of $8500. I am so happy, I was giving up hope of getting anything for my daughter. Of course she is eligible for Fed Loans of $5500 and parent loans.
Thanks for the note. We looked yesterday afternoon and FA was not posted yet, but it is now.
They have S’s merit award wrong on his FA, so it hasn’t caught up to his change of award from last week.
No work-study offer which I’d like to see for him…will have to inquire about that. Lists $25K in possible loans, some of which would be necessary to get his cost down to his EFC, but no offer of work-study? Higher merit will change that a bit, but as the package stands now I’m surprised there is no work-study. Wondering what their criteria are to offer it. I know he indicated on FAFSA that he was interested in WS.
He doesn’t qualify for Pell or other need-based grant aid because his merit brings his cost close enough to our EFC. Student Fed Loans would cover all but 2K (the gap)…(which is where the WS would be useful…).
@WhataProcess No work study for us either, wish there was…however I have heard there are lots of jobs available on campus if they go looking.
If you don’t mind my asking, what was your son’s Merit award and his credentials? This is my second daughter in college and I have learned to find out what others are getting, and if you feel you deserve more, to ask for it! But not sure if we “deserve” more!
@Felice1112 S received the Presidential Scholar’s award, which is for in-state Vals/Sals.
About work-study/jobs - I don’t have experience with UCONN, but I know on some campuses there can be fewer choices of jobs if you don’t have WS, because many have to give priority to WS kids. I think anyone getting need-based aid and being offered loans to bridge the gap should be offered WS, but maybe UCONN only has enough to offer it to their “neediest” students? I will definitely ask about it if UCONN remains a top choice after S receives decisions he’s still waiting on.
@WhataProcess Thanks for the update. I agree about Work Study, if there are any loans necessary, work study would be a great alternative. Good luck! And congrats on the scholarship, wish my daughter had pushed herself more, she had the potential, but being a Music kid, she focused more on her music classes than AP’s, etc. Oh well, she has a one track mind.
Just got my FA letter and it listed $43,000 as my potential parent loan on top of my $5500 I can take out as a student… kind of a bummer because uconn is now totally out of the question and I doubt an appeal would do much of anything
@gk1733 I think the parent loans they offer are crazy. I did a little research this morning and for each semester they charge a $350 loan fee! That is nuts. Much better off taking a Home Equity loan if possible.
