Has anyone heard from CMU pre-college yet?

DizzyDani ~

Yes....that's him !!

Soozievt ~

My son and the Scarecrow are friends - from the same town, have grown up doing shows together and were roommates at SDM !

My son had 3 parts in The Wiz. He was Uncle Henry; the Messenger (wore the UPS uniform if you watch the movie); and a lead dancer in the Ensemble. (Got the Hip Hop dance award at SDM.)

The girl he is taking to the prom tonight is "Addapearl" from The Wiz. I know you remember her......and her sister !! (More of our favorites - both very funny girls !!)

That is so wild about Grease - his was an adult production too. He was "Doody." He really wanted to go back to SDM, but when he was offered the part and $$$ - it was hard to turn down. It was a good experience to see if he would burn out doing the same show every night all summer. The experience left him wanting to pursue MT even more.

So, here we go.......Yes, he's my first...... I'm "fastening my seatbelt" for his upcoming senior year of applications; auditions; and nerves. He took the "new" SAT last Saturday - so I guess the ride has begun !!

nytheatermom-
I missed the information about the tap classes and the optional chorus! Is it in the handbook? I know my D is really looking forward to this....and would definitely love to be able to take a tap class.

Thanks so much....It's going to be such a great summer!

The information about tap in the evenings came generally from other posters on this site who said that last year there was an unofficial tap "class" in the evening. I don't know for sure. As to the chorus, my daughter said there was an "extra" form that of course dealt with extra costs to participate. So that is in the handbook I think. I will ask my daughter ("Broadway Wannabee") to further address this.

nytheatermom-
Now that you mention it, I do remember reading about the unofficial tap "class". Thanks so much!

4KidsMom...wow this is really funny and again small world. I would have to watch the video of The Wiz to recall your son as it was a long while ago that I saw the show and you know how that goes...I have seen countless SDM shows in the interim. But my D is very good friends with the scarecrow (M) too! In fact, when my D had her Boston Conservatory audition in early March, we met up with M. (and another SDM boy who still goes who I don't think you know, J.) and watched BOCO's musical production together! We also saw him back in December when he came to meet up with my D at her Emerson audition. He is going back this summer and rooming with my D's hometown boyfriend who is returning for second time to SD. M. is a talented young man who can really move on stage.

As to your son's promdate....now I know who you mean...one of the twins, right? Carl's granddaughter. They no longer go to camp but did for years with my D. Saw them grow up. Wow.

Funny about Grease. In the adult production my D did in the fall, she was Frenchy and her boyfriend (who is going to SDM) was Doody. Just about everyone else were adults. Doody is a very good part!

Hope he has fun at prom tonight...ours is in one week. My D is hoping to go without crutches for the first time that day. We shall see.

And if ya run into M. (or even the prom date), tell them you met my d's mom online, LOL.

Oh, and enjoy the ride next year with this college stuff.....keep reading here....it really helps. I am only ahead of you on it cause my D graduated early but otherwise would be in your group of kids as she is still sixteen. But I guess I'm done now (well, with THIS anyway!).

nytheatermom & califmom -

Last summer at cmu they had a tap class at night once a week for the last 3 weeks only. It replaced the time that they did Augusto Boal during the 1st 3 weeks. She absolutely loved the tap class - it was quite advanced and she said the majority of people dropped out, so I hope they still have it this year. I'd take tap shoes just in case. They did not offer chorus last year - that sounds great. Only the voice majors had chorus. They also offered playwriting which my D joined once she got there - then she tried to withdraw because it was a lot of work, but stuck with it and it turned out to be the BEST experience. At the end of the playwriting class you cast the play you wrote and they perform it at a reading. They also offer a directing option. She did not do that, so I can't comment on it.

I truly think that last summer was the best summer of her life. You guys are going to love it!

Soozievt ~ Thanks for your note. I've been reading your posts for several months, with no idea who your daughter was. I'm so glad she is doing well. I know we'll be seeing her again someday on stage!

Catsmom: Thanks for the info. I know my daughter is under the impression that non voice majors can be in the chorus. But she will have to double-check that point. At Interlochen last year, the high-quality c horus was one of my daughter's favorite things, so I hope this is a CMU summer option.

My daughter has signed up for the directing option, so I will be able to report back for next year's crop of applicants. The tap shoes are definitely being packed!

4KidsMom...thanks. I asked my daughter if she knew your son (once I mentioned his part in that musical) and she said, yes, she remembers him and that he might know who she was as well though they did not know each other well, as they have only overlapped that one session that one time. She reminded me, also, that your son must have also grown up with another male friend of hers from camp, TR, who is now a senior but at a private school. That session he was one of the kids in Sound of Music...you likely know who I mean. I told my daughter who your son is going to prom with and she smiled to think after all these years.....I recall vividly my D's first summer in 1998, some of the first kids we met were your son's date and her twin as they were Carl's granddaughters. I have not seen her since The Wiz and I imagine she is all grown up now. I hope they have a wonderful time tonight. And I hope your son has a blast at CMU's summer program. There are many families on this forum who have sent their kids there and they all write such positive things about it. We never looked into it because my daughter would never have wanted to change where she went each summer cause of her attachment to SDM all these years which was just fine by me. That's what it is all about....their spending their summers in ways they enjoy.

Susan

Catsmom-
Thanks so much for your reply! My D will definitely pack her tap shoes, too, and hope that there's a class again this year!

To hear that last summer was "the best summer of her life"----Those words make my heart sing! I am so happy for our kids to have this experience!

okay......

My daughter has posted under my name as she's going to be attending the summer program at CMU. Just didn't want to get anyone confused:D

Was wondering if those who are coming from out of town were going to try and visit any other colleges in the surrounding "areas" before dropping off their kids at CMU?

We are coming from Florida and thought about going to see a few of the other colleges D is interested in applying to next year. Thinking about flying in to one of the airports in NY and then flying out of PIT after dropping her off. Possibly going to Syracuse (may be too far), definitely going in to NYC. This is the only possible time to do this as D will not take any time out from school to see them at a later date.

Was wondering how far Pit is from NYC-anyone know? I think we'll arrive in Pit on Saturday. She wants to go see a show in NYC while there and thought we'd do that on Friday in hopes my S can come over on the train and join us overnight, then head back to CT. Definitely going to be a jam packed few days!

THANKS!:D

Debbie

I don't think I'm going persay right before i go...I think I may just fly in to PA myself, but my mom is taking me to NY to see a couple colleges(and shows hehe) the second week in June....but it could work out that I go the week before or...I don't know!
I'm from CA though.

I'm coming from New York (not manhattan), but we're not looking to visit colleges on the way up. NYC from Pittsburgh is about 450 miles, according to my dad.

I have talked to your daughter online. I'm soooo excited for this summer!!

oh and I think it's.....a few hours away by car? but maybe I'm the wrong person to be answering that

It's about 6.5 hours.

You would either take the Lincoln or Holland tunnel, depending on where you are staying (Holland is more direct, but most people stay in mid-town).

-- Your hotel can give you directions to I-78 West (you pick this up in the Newark area).
-- You take I-78 to I-81 South (Harrisburg, PA area).
-- You then take the PA Turnpike into the Pittsburgh area.

You probably don't want a car in Manhattan. You can take a taxi or public transportation from NYC to the Newark airport, and pick up a rental car there (it's usually less expensive in NJ also).

Also, check airfares. It might be less expensive to fly from NY or Newark to Pittsburgh (vs. the one-way drop off charges for the car rental). There's a relatively new airline flying from Newark to Pittsburgh (Independence Air .... www.flyi.com). Inexpensive one-way tickets (via Dulles). Other airlines seem to be meeting the prices so it's been a win for those of us who travel that route frequently.

-- You could take I-80 East -- there's a Penn State exit right off of I-80.
-- Then take I-80 East to I-79 South into Pittsburgh.

There might be a better way to do this one ... but, it wouldn't be too far off the beaten path to visit Penn State on the way from NY to Pittsburgh.

My guess is it is more like 8 hours from NYC to Pittsburgh. Our plan is to leave NYC northern suburbs that morning and hope for no traffic along the way.

Congrats to everyone you has gotten in, so far. Im thrilled as I am sure all of you are. I was wondering if it were possible if people going to the CMU Pre-college program could simply post their AIM screen names so we're all able to talk to one another. Mine is same as my username for CC, Scruggz06. I hope to be talking to some people soon. Have a good week. :)

I've driven it ... oh ... about 100 times. :)

From the Marriott Marquis (Times Square) to Carnegie Mellon, per Rand McNally:

6 hours, 40 minutes
Total Driving Distance: 371 miles
