Has anyone here applied for the GRFP? If so, any insights would be greatly appreciated.

What does GRFP stand for?

My guess it is the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program.

You might have better luck in the Graduate School forum: [Graduate School - College Confidential](Graduate School - College Confidential Forums)

I applied back when I was starting. I didn’t get it so I don’t really know what to tell you other than good luck.

Yeah. It is the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program.

Well, I have had my graduate students and undergraduates in our physics program apply and it is very hard to get one and it gets harder as you go from undergraduate to first year and then second year graduate. This year, we had one out of 3 undergraduates win one and no graduate students.

Even though it is hard to get, it is a good experience to write these proposals and the comments you get back can be used to improve your next year’s effort.

It definitely is very competitive. ~10-20% success rate, but the majority of the applicants are top students.
They are increasing the number of awards this year from ~2000 to about 2700, but we’ll probably see an increase in the number of applicants as well.
