I’m also a transfer student, and I’m probably gonna choose UCSD over UCLA, because I’m a philosophy major and I wanna double major, but UCLA doesn’t have any other major I’m interested in, but UCSD does.

I was wondering does anyone know what type of job does UCSD offer for CS/E major? I mean even if they are the same ranking, it would be pointless if USCD’s location makes it hard to get connections with large companies, no?

^UCSD is in San Diego… 2nd largest city in California, tons of companies and jobs and opportunities to network… it’s not like we’re in some rural farm town here!!

ECE at UCSD is a bear of a major; but if you can hack it, you are among the few that can walk outta there into a $50- $80K job. There is also threads within the ECE major that allow one to pursue some very interesting stuff: electro-optics, communications, multi-processor machine language, and game engine design (perhaps; these profs are ‘guests’, and some of the best are not returning; eg. Engle). Some of the threads speak of a ‘social life’, and ‘fun events’… NONE of these students are CE/ECE majors however (or at least, not for long). Getting out of there in 5 years as an ECE major is doing well… and even then, you would have to be a Muir or Warren College student; Sixth is out of the question. Almost all EE departments are DOMINATED by Asian students; esp. UCLA, but at UCSD they are militant (against non-Cantonese heritages).

Irwin and Joan Jacobs (the ones who the Jacobs School of Engineering is named AFTER) are also the founders and owners of QUALCOMM, which is based in San Diego, and have been known to recruit many of the top graduates in any and all of the engineering majors, many times for very generous salaries. If you parse through the Jr. Engineer payroll, a large proportion is comprised of UCSD graduates.

Son is attending UCSD as a Bio major, was accepted to UCLA, Berk, UCI, and a handful of East Coast schools.

UCSD is the BEST. No contest at all. After our round of visits, I dont see how anybody could even compare them seriously. All the lists and university grading systems are wrong. Read the new book, Crazy U and learn about who actually makes up these lists, its all phony.

Heres an overly-opinionated list of WHY ITS UCSD NO CONTEST:

Average under-graduation time at UCSD is 4 years and 1 quarter. This allows students to apply and study-travel around the world for 4 years and summers. UCSD has study abroad programs unique to itself and no other UCs, including trips to Paris in summer and through the school year. Credits earned are exactly the same as attending classes on campus. You can actually get financial aid for these.

Academics are better or equal to any other school in California and most on East Coast. Access to profs. Outstanding world class research.

UCSD has an exchange program with Dartmouth.

Healthiest campus in the country.

No smog.

Runners Paradise. Lots of jogging all over the campus and the surrounding areas.

Skateboard Paradise. Skate shops on campus and all over San Diego.

ITS ON A CLOTHING OPTIONAL BEACH. Thats right, parts of Blacks Beach are nude. You can surf nude there. You can swim and sunbathe nude. Did I just convince you? WHY NOT?

Bike paths are so plentiful they actually have an incredibly busy bike shop in the center of the campus, in a 1970s collection of buildings that are the funky center of the college.

The General Store Co-op sells vinyl records, bongs (!) guitars, and record players.

The six college system works great.

They have a new sit-down full service gourmet seafood restaurant thats reasonably priced. Its so busy you cant get in without reservations.

Revelle is the coolest of the 6 colleges, despite its reputation as a nerd nest, they have their own library and computer center, late night snacks, their own bio study halls, and are beside the DANCE/THEATER school where all the hot girls go to learn how to be even hotter girls and you can see all the new theater plays, dance shows, etc. This is also right across the street from the nationally known La Jolla Playhouse; meaning the best entertainment in the city is 1 minute from your Revelle dorm.

1 billion dollars in research funding as of this year. They take research VERY seriously.

Go to Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach if you get bored. They make San Francisco look like the John Birch Society Sunday Coffee Brunch.

UCSD has 3 on-campus live music pubs; Porters, Che Cafe, and the newest, the Loft which is up on the second/third floor and has a giant wraparound wall of windows behind the bands looking down on the campus. Its AMAZING and they are beginning to book more pro groups there.

The UCSD alumni network is involved and exciting.

Going to Berk? Kiss your sweet 4.0 GPA goodbye. Youll get a 3.0. Your parents will be bragging to anybody who will listen about how their kid is going to Berkeley and meanwhile youll be sweating doing finals youve stayed up for 48 hours studying just to try to get a mark somewhere near the center of the curve. Good luck, youll need it bro.

At UCLA, students run most of the departments as work/study and they dont know where anything is, and cant touch the thing youre asking for until their adult manager comes back at 2:00. Im not kidding. Its scary. Try making a black & white copy at UCLA. Just try it. Again, good luck.

Just visit UCSD. You’ll love it.

@HappyDaddie, thanks for the post! We went to admit day last weekend and DS loved it. Your post will help even more. BTW, what’s the name and where is the location of the seafood restaurant? Will check it out in Sep…

The restaurant is right in the middle of the transfer dorms at Eleanor Roosevelt college at the north end of the campus, it’s called “The Bistro in the Village” and is pretty much a secret right now, they’re open 11-2:30 Mon-Thurs. testing the menu, but fulltime lunch and dinner in September. IT’S REALLY NICE. I think they’ll be offering prime steaks in Sept. at night.

And thanks, I thought that some people would think I was spamming/■■■■■■■■/pulling their leg, but realistically I can’t think of a single reason that UCLA is better for your longtime future. You will be happier, healthier and better connected by far at UCSD. It’s going to take the public another 2-5 years to realize it, though…

The transfer dorms, by the way, are brand new and super retro-futuristic, and Revelle has a new sophomore dorm building opening this September (2011) that has among other things, all heated towel racks.

Berkeley? What’s that? Is it in Michigan?

^ lmao love the last comment. Judging by all your comments about revelle im guessing you were at that college, I was hoping you might be able to give me some more good things about it (I’ve heard way too many bad things). Also if you had any info about the CSE department that would be great as well.

Happydaddie I don’t understand why you find it invigorating to have a University that is easy to find bongs at. Are you seriously ok with having your child get stoned. Sounds like you have issues.

^ and if you have problems with stoners, you might have issues at ucsd. and at most other colleges, for that matter. you’ll meet all kinds of people in college. relax already.

I am against it but if someone does choose to do it go ahead. I do not find it healthy that a father is encouraging his son to go to school somewhere just so its easy to access “bongs”

I’m obviously not encouraging drug use, I just think it’s funny as heck that bongs are available on campus. Relax.

A few other things for the person who asked a few posts ago, Revelle is truly it’s own college. It has a huge common area, its own store and snack shack, a giant cafe and almost everything else you need. The other colleges look less, I don’t know, . . . classy.

The supposedly scary Revelle GE requirements can largely be wiped out with a decent set of high school AP courses. (The counselors encourage this!) One girl we know there is graduating in 3 years, and it was not hard. My kid plans to take most of the rest as part of the abroad programs, and do the basic science core at UCSD. This is going to be an amazing experience for him.

Revelle is known internationally. A Japanese doctor friend was asking about Revelle a few years ago and that was the first time I had heard of it.

No way Jose. LA and Berkeley is way too much to give up for UCSD.

@Tyler… don’t worry, you won’t be forced to smoke weed or hang out with stoners if you don’t want to. Thankfully.

@OP: Go with where your most happy…if its UCSD’s environment that you like better, you’ll have a better time/work harder as a result. just make sure to visit every campus.

@HappyDaddie: I’m happy for your son. however, that’s a big misconception about about difficulty between UCSD and LA and Berkeley…the difficulty is very comparable between the three schools. The same profile of students get into LA and CAL, and pretty much UCSD as well. I know you’re exaggerating about CAL, but the sciences at UCSD are tough (many friends at SD) …I’ve heard some people say it can be even harder than LA since there’s less to do for students.

on a side note, there are plenty smokers/pot heads at any school. alcohol is even more common. however, there are plenty of people who don’t participate in stuff like that and have a good time so its definitely not required to enjoy college.

I don’t understand this at all. The only thing that is different about Revelle is their writing class. Is that writing class just that amazing?

Kings never fails to make my day.

Honestly, the easy double minor in Warren will look way better than the “prestige” of Revelle.

My best friend choice SD over LA. Asked if she regretted it and she said never, do it all again if she had to. Another friend of mine chose LA and recently graduated last year. Ate lunch with her the other day and she was telling me she regretted going to LA and wish she chose another school.

Honestly the only thing I can think of where LA>SD is the social scene. But again, college is what you make out of it and as long as you get off your butt and make some friends then there’s nothing to cry about. A lot of people I know that graduated from SD all talked about how even though it wasn’t crazy parties every weekend, they made some of their bestest friends there. And Campus, academics, competition, etc. are all on par with each other. I’m transferring this year and although I’m still waiting for LA decisions to come out, I’m more leaning towards SD particularly for my major. And besides SD has their own transfer dorm, one side COMPLETELY new! Gotta love that :)

No question that UCSD is a great school and has absolutely kicked a** is in its short history. But ya gotta walk before you can run; I think you’re hearing a lot more comparisons between UCLA and UCSD and people, as discussed in this thread, are looking at these schools as equals.

You almost certainly can get a better undergraduate education at UCSD than you can at Cal - but it’s still Cal, and Berkeley’s reputation nationally/globally is still a ways beyond UCSD. Just like Stanford, Ivy’s, the Institutes, these are the places that are at the top and only have one way to go. UCSD is still on the rise - and will continue to warrant strong consideration as a Top 50 to 20 school.
