Did Swarthmore send a little postcard, e-mail, etc.? I received nothing, and when I called the admissions office, a terse receptionist said they were "unable to check application status at this time."

Swarthmore didn't send any acknowledgement last year. They'll be in touch if the app is not complete.

Right now, I imagine that they have applications piled up to the ceiling being collated with test score reports and sent out to various readers.

I am sure they will contact you if something is missing.

And you can always call the admissions office asking if your application is complete. I did that last year for my irresponsible kid and got a 'no' answer. They are very good about answering phone calls or even returning them. And it is better if the student himself calls rather than mom or dad.

And by the way, applications are up this year significantly from last year:

See the last paragraph.

probably due to all the parents on this site who want to attend next year

About two weeks ago, I called the Swat admissions office and asked if/when they'd send out confirmation.

They were nice actually, and not terse. They just said that they'd gotten more apps this year, and that in a couple of weeks they'd send confirmation.

I'm not expecting anything though.

i sent my app in pretty early, like october, so since then i've been receiving things such as the swarthmore promotional cd (which is quite good!) and pamphlets on my academic interests, etc.. i also e-mailed admissions to make sure they received everything and they responded. i'm sure if you wait they'll let you know, though.

wow i just read that article.. trying to attract kids that are "more mainstream"? is that a good thing or a bad thing? how do you determine if someone is mainstream?

That is not what anyone from admissions said. That was a quote from a member of the freshman class.

My impression is that Swarthmore's marketing materials are incredibly honest. If anything, I think they undersell some of the unique qualities of the school.

I applaud Bock for understanding that a stereotype like "there's no partying at Swarthmore" can cause kids who would be ideally suited to the school to reject it out of hand. Students who, in fact, might actually prefer a school where booze is freely available, but "drink 'til you puke" is not a widescread activity. I think Bock is smart for looking at ways to better present what the school is about.

"probably due to all the parents on this site who want to attend next year"

:)

But I'd also like to think it is us parents up in arms everytime someone says Swat is for wierd people! That we're trying to fight this negative stereotype that is working....but no, I think I'm exaggerating the importance of this forum.

Isn't it? I've always though my son was a little weird. Cute, but weird.

My son is as mainstream as they get. He just happened to become a Swat student by happenstance. He's never been in the fringe of anything. I guess I have to be less sensitive.

He's never been in the fringe of anything.

Same here. I think in this context, "weird" may refer to anyone but Biffy and Buffy down at the yacht club!

I feel like I have gotten to "know" most of the kids in my daughter's group through her descriptions, photos, and stuff. I don't see a lot of "weird".

Some "book-ish" types. An assortment of ethnic backgrounds. A couple of gay or "questioning". No goth, pierced, or tattooed or otherwise "statement uniformed". Some "preppier" than others. Mostly just your run of the mill smart kids from what I can tell.

Overall, just younger versions of the four seniors who spoke on the panel at the parent's orientation.

I wouldnt necessarily equate weird with being on the fringe. And, plenty of schools have their cadres of weird students. Id suggest that at Swarthmore, an entire range of students find a home.

The Swat Unscripted video just made me want to apply more.

I got an e-mail about a week after I sent my app acknowledging that they had received it...
