Has anyone received their financial aid package yet?

I really need to see the amount of Aid this school wll give me before I can accept.

Can I accept even before Fin Aid? I don't want to lose my acceptance.

You have up until May 1st to decide upon going to PSU. And, no, I didn’t get my SAR neither. Anxiously waiting, though…-_-

Wait, do they send out financial aid, THEN decide?
Or you decide, then they let you know your financial aid…
Cause I swear at the welcome day info event, they said it was the 2nd way…

Thanks KJSnr2009.

retrooo:
I hope that’s not true, because I haven’t accepted. They said they would send SAR (student aid report) in march… and march is almost over.

I have an EFC of 0, no assets, no money in savings nothing. I’m out of state. Michigan and Syracuse University recently gave me horrible financial aid packages (each with a gap above $11,000). I know penn isn’t any better with aid, but it is alot cheaper than those other schools. I’m really scared because I think I may have to attend my safety school, which means I have to live at home and go to a school that spread all over a city. :(

The SAR is sent by the FAFSA folks. It is not calculated by the colleges. You should be able to log in and get that information right now.

State colleges are being inundated with applications this year, due to the state of the economy. Everyone is running late. Call the financial aid office is you are concerned, but they will likely just tell you they are running late.

Not every college is need-blind. Not every college states they will meet need, let alone loan free. Penn State is not known for its generosity. It’s a good school.
I think the term “Safety” school is now obsolete. Replace “safety” with “affordable”. Many folks are choosing not to go to their #1 choice.

Hey DrMan54, my EFC was 0 as well and Penn State was generous with aid. If you want to know the specifics pm me.

I spoke with the financial aid department yesterday afternoon. They told me they would be sending FA information via email by the middle of this week for 09-10 fall admits. If you were accepted into summer session, the FA will come last minute, like mid april.

Hey guys just a helpful hint. They have yet to send the email, but whhat I did was go on to their fin aid page and click on the elion link at the boyyom. You then enter your penn state fps id (xxx####) and password and you will need your Penn State id (series of numbers). After you log in just click on aid summary and it should be in there, at least it was for me. However the estimated costs might be off, it says that it cost over 17000 per year, but I thought it was around 24000 for the college of science.

Our estimate of cost to attned PSU was OVER $24,400, but we got ZERO free money. Just loans, which I will not allow my D to accept. :(

To everyone- Do not be too distraught with your PSU aid packages. PSU becomes MUCH more generous with $ as you advance, showing your worth academic and EC wise.

Another tactic that my mom and I perfected last year is bartering with the schools.

Say you are offered $X at Big Ten School A but got ripped off at Big Ten School B (Where you want to go).

What has worked for me last year with bumping up aid is calling up school B and be like:

“Hey, School A has offered this much and your stripped for cash and may have to accept it, but you would rather attend your school (B)”

3/5 times last year I came out with more grants.

I got through the first page with my Friend of Penn State ID number but the 2nd page is asking for my 9 digit student number.

I don’t remember getting a nine digit number.

your nine digit student ID is at the bottom of your acceptance letter.

That’s at home. I guess I’ll deal with it tonight.

I hope, with the current recession, returning students will get at least the same amount of aid as last year. I don’t know what I’m going to do if I have to pay 24k out of pocket.

your PSU ID is also on your mypennstate account, but when i put mine in it says another member has that number…

why is psu so stingy with merit aid?

"why is psu so stingy with merit aid? "

Maybe because they can be, and still attract highly qualified students?

For a public school, they are one of the highest ranked, most respected schools in the nation. I guess that comes at a price. But, they offer top notch facilities, and score so much higher than other state schools on almost all levels. I’m OOS, and the tuition is so much more than any other publics I was accepted to. For instance, UDel, OOS for me is 30K with room and bosrd, PSU is 36K. PSU is my first choice hands down, and I think that UDel can’t compare to what PSU offers (sorry UDel). But thats a lot of money over 4 years; worth it IMO.

when I put in the right password and user ID it says they’re invalid! :frowning: what do I do?

My S is having the same problem. But he didn’t get the email yet, only I got the email advising me that they had sent an email to my S, except they didn’t.

same problem!
