more questions…How many deans scholarships are yet to be awarded? I have seen posts about people receiving more scholarship money in april what are the sizes of those? Is merit scholarship negotiation possible, lets say if I receive a deans scholarship but also a 20k per year award from another school has USC ever been known to bump up their offer ?

The good bit of news is that it appears the “no scholarship” notice will be by email this year - I feel that will be an improvement.

yoskis/iamlumberjack: Decisions will be mailed March 26th and available online on March 29th. http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/apply/dates_deadlines.html

USC will consider need-based financial aid appeals. I have never heard of merit-aid being increased in response to other merit aid offers, but it never hurts to ask. I am sorry you are bitter about these very selective awards. Congratulations on your other wonderful options.

So confused….what does it mean if my son got the big yellow admittance envelope but there was no mention of interviewing for a scholarship?

Congratulations on your son’s admission!

My best guess about that (and based on the procedures of the past few years) is that he will receive a letter awarding him a Dean’s 1/4 tuition scholarship by mid-February. Please note that some of those who interview for the scholarship will come away with a Director’s scholarship of $4,000/year, so being awarded a Dean’s outright is a GOOD thing.

Got the same thing @yoskis, these next couple months are going to feel pretty long…

alamemon, sorry if my post came off as whiny. Congrats to everyone who got one, you all deserve it more than me best of luck in the interviews. good luck to everyone else waiting we me and ninja for a couple long months.

Alamemom, how soon you forget! My son was given a music merit scholarship (not a big one, but as big as they ever give) after we nicely mentioned to Thornton that he had music scholarships from some other schools, but wanted to attend USC. We knew he was going to USC regardless, but patiently waited to pull the trigger on committing in order to give (we believe) others a chance to turn USC down. So with certain departmental scholarships, it is possible.

Sounds like everyone who is interviewing for trustee or presidential got notification in their acceptance packet, correct? Luckily my son is NMF so he will get Presidential but was hoping for chance to interview for Trustee. Congrats to all who were invited to interview!

@yoskis
Can my D and you swap acceptances? j/k
Congratulations for being accepted early at HYPS. That is equally, if not more, impressive as being selected for merit at USC.

I noticed my son has new message as. PDF in his USConnect portal. My guess is it says he is not a scholarship recipient. When I click on it I get an error message saying it is corrupted. Tried several browsers and get the same message. Anyone else having this problem? I already emailed USC tech support.

@GamerGal27: Same thing is happening to me. I’m also assuming it’s a scholarship rejection message, but it would be nice to be able to at least open it!

@yoskis - did you interview? it is possible they think you are using them as safety schools. Last year, I have seen many high stats folks outrightly rejected while someone only in the top 25-40% (with much lower stats ) get in. I think the schools are looking at potential yield. The good news is - you have great options. One thing about USC that I have seen is they heavily market themselves and give everyone hopes to get their numbers up and then reject a lot of folks (who they think may not fit with the culture). Again that is just my opinion…and I concede USC isn’t the only one to do this.

Hope you have great in-state options as well…I know lot of people are waiting for the UC regents to come out next month.

I got the status change and just got the admissions packet in the mail!!! Fight on!

My S also had a change in USConnect. A new PDF that is titled “Information about the scholarship process”. Same issue as @GamerGal27. PDF is corrupted. No change in status. No packet. We live in MD.

@gamergal27 It would not open for me either in uscconnect. But I believe the same message was what I got through email. Did he get an email? The text of it is posted here somewhere.

@2018 Congratulations to your D, I would say it is equally impressive, there is a much smaller accept rate for scholarship interviews than the overall rates at HYPS. But you have higher stats and a self selecting pool at HYPS too…

@fall2016parent No, I didn’t and I did not visit either. The interview session near me was on a busy weekend and I didn’t want to spend the money to drive there and send the night. Same thing for visiting, why spend a considerable amount of money to fly across the country to visit when it could be used on tuition money and I would have had to go anyways if I got invited. That could be a possibility that I wasn’t invited because they thought I was using them as a safety…

I think the reason I didn’t get an interview was that I applied to the wrong majors, rushed my essays and my gpa is average for USC(~3.7UW even tho the rest of my stats are high). I submitted the common app like a month early with the WBB selected as my first choice major and chemE in viterbi program as my second choice which was flawed. They don’t really reflect in my ECs and the WBB program is super competitive. I would have selected Poli-sci in dornsife if I had to do it again. I waited until the day of the deadline to do my supplements and they were rushed. The WBB had like 4 supplement questions + the two for viterbi= 1500 words of writing in one day. That was my biggest mistake, I have really no one to blame other than myself. And to cap it off my ACT scores arrived like a week late.

Neither of my kids interviewed at USC or at another site prior to being offered a scholarship interview invite. I think USC goes after the kids they select for merit without regards to final yield numbers-- they have a set yield they predict from this group of 1,000. Both spent time and effort on their applications and did their homework regarding the majors they were interested in at USC. Both went to USC presentations at their high schools.

It also does not make sense that they yield protect March acceptances either-- certainly if they did so their yield would be much higher than it is. Again, they go after the students they want-- this doesn’t mean the highest test scorers necessarily though.

Just received the email saying he didn’t get any of the big scholarships. This was expected. At least we are both happy that stress is over!

If you look at the freshman profile you see that the stats of the admitted students are higher than those who actually enroll which does not protect the yield.

I’m so confused as well…Got an offer today in a packet but there is no indication as whether I received any form of scholarship…Neither have I received any email or PDF on my portal about scholarship…What does this mean? Anyone has the same situation?

My son is one of the kids accepted yesterday with no mention of scholarship interview. Just got off the phone with his admissions counselor and she said that a small number of “high caliber” students are admitted early and not offered a scholarship interview and this information is not generally well known. She repeated several times that early acceptance is an honor which I definitely agree with. So, I think it’s safe to confirm what alamemom was correct in their assumption that if you don’t get a scholarship invite with acceptance packet, you’re not getting one - just FYI….
