Has anyone on CC actually studied for the AMC or AIME?

The studying I did was to get exactly 7 questions right on the AMC 12 (if I remember correctly) so I could get 101. I then proceeded to bomb the AIME. :)

Actually, you need 11 right to go on to the AIME. And yes, I studied. Last year I got 105.5 and ranked fairly low in my state and then got a 2 on the AIME. This year, I purchased all of the AMC 12's and AIME's from the AMC people about 2 weeks before the AMC, studied like mad, took all the practice tests, and all this preparating coupled with number theory and structure classes at university and a mad love of math got me a 123 on the 12B, which was the highest in my state. I only got 6 on the AIME though, which is an improvement from last year, but not enough to qualify for the USAMO :(

In any case, yes, it is very studyable.

zogoto, a 123 is an excellent score and so is a 6 on the AIME. If you are just a junior in HS or less then you have an excellent shot at making it to the USAMO next year. At 183 you are 20-40 points away from going.

I took the AMC the last three years, this year I got 108 and took the AIME. I think I got 3-5 on it, but we haven't even gotten our scores back. What exactly is the USAMO???

Unfortunately, these days that's not exactly true Eagle79. You really need an index of at least 230 to be in the running - this year, to be exact 233.0 was the cutoff. But of course, many people improve about 60 points a year.

It's not really "studyable." IMO, you have to do a lot of problems and improve problem solving skill. Check out www.artofproblemsolving.com for resources.

chemistry101, the USAMO is the USA Mathematical Olympiad, the round after the AIME and the most prestigious math competition in the US. See www.unl.edu/amc. Check with the teacher who administered the AMC. AIME scores should have been returned a long time ago.

My friend made it past the USAMO. He's going to some 1 month camp during June. I envy him so much (since he told me its even more selective than RSI).

joml88's AIME score improved from 1 to USAMO qualifier in one year.
