How hard Econ 141 will be if I haven't taken math 53 but only math 54? Thanks

Econ 141 has more in common with Stat 134 and Stat 135. I’m taking it with Nekipelov this semester and we’ve pretty much covered nearly all the important stuff from Stat 134 in the last 2 weeks. We’ve just started to go over Stat 135 stuff. Econ 141 is also all about regression analysis which is covered in the last part of Stat 135. I’d recommend taking at least Stat 134 before taking Econ 141. From what I can tell, a significant number of people in the class have taken Stat 134 before, so if you don’t, you’ll be at a severe disadvantage.

The only relevant knowledge from Math 53 is knowing how to solve multiple integrals. You need to know this for working with distribution functions of continuous random variables. You need to know this for Stat 134 as well.

What about Econ100A, how much will it be used in this class? thanks

that’s a big plummet from the supposedly hardest econ class to econ 100a…
does econ 100a even have a math prereq? like 16B at the most. ■■■■■

So do you think I have a chance to survive the class even without taken math 53 and is currently taking econ 100A? thanks

You don’t really need Econ 100/101A or B for this class. Have you taken Stat 134 before? If you have, then go ahead and take Econ 141. If you haven’t, you might be better off taking Econ 140 instead.

I have taken Econ 21, will this count?

I think you mean Stat 21? It doesn’t help anyway, the only classes that are useful for Econ 141 are Stat 134 and 135. Seriously, it sounds like you really want to take Econ 141, so I suggest you just go ahead. You might end up with a bad grade but somebody’s gotta get the Cs.

qft. +1

10char

its pretty hard to get a C in econ 141. I took it with Powell and he said the lowest grade he would give was a C and that would be if the person got terrible grades on the homework and got the lowest scores in the class on the midterms and the final. The median is usually an A- so its actually not that hard of a class. Also, i don’t think you’ll need much material from math 53. I’m in Econ 240 and I think the most you’d ever need for basic econometrics is just knowing how to do multiple integrals.

Thanks a lot, I think I may try to take it this semester and see how hard it is gonna be. Thanks for the advice again.

Does anyone here knows the mean and sd for the first midterm of this class?

Mean was 45 and sd was 5. ± 1 for both, I don’t remember the exact numbers.

and the full score is 50?

^ if the full score were 50, i feel it would really suck to be in that class.

it’s 57 not 50. Still the mean seems pretty high

Yeah, it’s out of 57. I thought the mean was kinda low since the MT was pretty easy. It was very similar to the practice midterm provided. Nekipelov seemed disappointed with the results as well.

will he give a pracitice midterm for the second exam as well?

Has the prof said in class that he would not fail anyone for this class?

If I have taken math 53 and stat 134 already, is it necessary to take math 54 for econ 141?
