Has anyone taken Intermediate Accounting I? I heard it's the hardest class for accounting students and I am about to take it this coming quarter. I'm a little nervous so does anyone have tips on how to succeed in this class?

Hi there. I took it this past quarter. The class isn’t easy. For me, it was the hardest ever. I also spent more time on this class than ever (I have about 110 college credits).
So, expect to spend on this class a lot of time.

How to succeed:
- Read the assigned chapter(s) BEFORE the class. Try to do suggested (or better ALL) exercises there.
- Participate in the class. Don’t be afraid to be wrong sometimes.
- Go to class (the most obvious…)
- Go to your teacher’s office hours. Don’t be afraid to look stupid by showing that you don’t understand some concepts. Trust me, in most cases you will find other students struggling with the same concepts.
- I don’t know if there will be cases (most likely there will be), but try to go beyond the minimum requirements in them.
- Pick a good motivated partner for the group writing assignment or if you can’t find one – do it yourself.
- Prepare well for the exams. Do practice exams over and over. Always do all extra/practice problems the teacher might post.

If you do all this stuff and put some effort into it, you should be fine. I didn’t do all the exercises from the book, sometimes I didn’t read the assigned chapters on time, and my writing assignment partner wasn’t very motivated (so it didn’t turn out that good). As a result, I ended up with a 3.6. I could have done better though. In my Intermediate II I’m going to do it differently.

Thanks for the tips. Can you tell me what chapters you go over for the class?

You can give me your email (PM) and I will send you the part of the syllabus that contains chapters with specific pages and suggested exercises.

Hey Seatac, have you taken Intermediate Accounting II yet? If so, how is it compared to Intermediate I? Intermediate I has been a challenge, I’m currently studying for my final (Receivables chapter is killing me!)

Most of it is not conceptually hard, but it’s fast paced with a lot chapters and with a lot of homework. I remember the PV and FV of money being the hardest parts. My crazy prof demanded hand calculations.

@ajymerced, i found Intermediate II a little bit more challenging than I. II’s first half is not that hard. The second part is pretty hard - especially LEASES. Your prof will be D. Shores - she is nice overall, but certainly not the best prof. Pay particular attention to her conceptual questions - she tests on them.

Great, and I thought Intermediate I was suppose to be the hardest class for the accounting major…Well I’m taking courses at UWB, so I wont have her. But my next quarter will be rough(Business Finance, Intermediate account II, and cost accounting)

Oh, right. I forgot that you are at UWB.
I heard that cost accounting is brutal! I will try delay taking it as long as possible :)
