I'm currently trying to decide between taking PH162 (Prof Sorenson) and Psych133 (Prof Kaplan) for the summer. Both would fulfill a major requirement for me. The problem is that the drop deadline for session C is this coming Friday and my psych class (in session D) won't have started by then. I've been attending the PH classes, but I would like to get an idea of what Psych133 is like in comparison because I can't find any information about it online. Can anyone who has taken either of these classes give me an idea of what lectures/exams/readings/grades are like and how easy the class is overall? I'm also taking another class that will require a lot of my time so I would like to combine it with the easier one out of PH162 or Psych133.

if you are choosing between the two, i think the more obviously easy one would be psych 133. i had kate kaplan as a gsi for psych 117 (neuropsych) last semester and she was pretty great. and her research is on sleep disorders so she’d probably be a great 133 professor. ph 162a will probably be a lot more memorizing i’d imagine and it might be harder to get the same A compared to 133.

what is your major btw?

I took 133 with Harvey (great prof, btw). The class is really interesting and you mostly learn from lectures and research articles (about 2 ever week) since there is no textbook. The exams are OK if you study and understand the concepts. I don’t know how it would be with Kaplan though. Like I said, I took it with Harvey so Kaplan’s format might be different.

Thanks for the input! I think I’m leaning towards Psych133. The prof for 162 is pretty laid back, but there still seems to be a lot of memorization for this class: according to the syllabus ~60 mechanisms for diseases, 40 specific pathogens (i’m not sure if that’s considered a lot?), 2 midterms and a final (noncumulative), some extra credit opportunities. Isn’t Psych133 a lot of memorizing too though? And were Harvey’s exams multiple choice, short answer, essay format or a mix of all of these? Btw, my major is Psych and MCB.

For us, Psych 133 required as much memorization as any other psych class but the concepts were far more important. The only complaints I had were that there were some questions which were really stupid (i.e., “which of the following has more caffeine: mountain dew, tall coffee, coke, or latte”) and my GSI was a **** who would take points off of misspelled terms. The exams were generally lax. There was a mixture of short answer and multiple choice, but no essay. Oh, and her exams were pretty small too (~25 questions). At least I know what to expect from psych 130 in the fall.

lol PH162. Leif man. smh. He’s funny, but those lectures are knocking me out.
