Hi, I’m a current high school senior and I’ll be going to De Anza Community College in the fall. I really want to be a nurse but I’m super confused about how to go about it. Do I just fulfill all the IGETC requirements + some nursing pre-reqs and transfer into a CSU (I want to potentially go to SDSU or Long Beach). Or do I need to complete an ADN (Associates Degree of Nursing) and then transfer? If I do that then do I need to apply to De Anza’s nursing program? I’ve been researching a lot online but it’s really confusing.
Do the ADN program if you know you want to become a nurse. De Anza has a nursing program info meeting coming up this week, can you go? https://www.deanza.edu/nursing/infodates.html
There is another one in June.
When you complete your ADN you take the NCLEX-RN test, De Anza students have a fairly high pass rate on the NCLEX. https://rn.ca.gov/education/passrates.shtml
If you pass the NCLEX-RN test, you can begin working as an RN, which some people choose to do. The downside is typically an ADN grad will make less money than a BSN, and may not qualify for supervisory jobs.
If you want to continue your education, you could do the ADN to BSN bridge program at SDSU https://nursing.sdsu.edu/programs/rn-to-bsn/admissions/ to get your bachelor’s degree or Long Beach https://web.csulb.edu/colleges/chhs/departments/nursing/studentinfo/PathwayProgram-RNtoBSN.htm
There are also part-time bridge programs and online bridge programs.
Good luck!
Thank you so much for all of the help!
