I'm a senior at corona del mar and I'm taking one class at occ now so I can get better chances of getting classes next year. My goal would be to get into ucla for dental and I'm just curious on the difficulty of honors classes at occ that I'd have to take. I heard you need 30 honors credits for TAP but can I choose most of the honors classes or are they specific classes I have to take? I've heard from some kids that honors classes at Occ are easier than honors in high school but then I've heard they're extremely hard so have any of you been through this?
Also if I am able to pick the honors classes, any reccomondations?

Honors student at OCC here, I’m transferring to UCLA in the fall. To complete the honors program and be TAP certified you need to complete 18 units of honors coursework, and you do get to choose which honors classes you take. Their difficulty varies, but I wouldn’t not take a class because of its reputation of being difficult, because then you would be missing out on some awesome classes.

I recommend honors poli sci with Roessler, and honors Eng 102 with Rangno, both very difficult (I wouldn’t take them in the same semester like I did), but also two of my favorite classes! Mostly what you’re going to find in honors classes is additional work and a higher calibre of classmates. Honors Soc 185 and Anth 100 are both good classes, and require less work than the two I mentioned before (and really can be downright easy if you show up and do the work). I hear Irini Rickerson’s art history courses are pretty good, too! I loved the honors program, and highly recommend that everyone complete it because of the competitiveness of university admissions these days. Anyway, here is a link for the program, let me know if you have any other questions!

I am also a student at occ and i agree with most everything colorsinthestars said. Much like you i wanted to go to ucla and was aspiring to be a pre-dental student. While i did get into ucla for fall 12’(mostly because of TAP), I am not a life science major because there are simply too many pre reqs to be done to transfer as a life science major if you do not apply your AP credits and if you want to transfer within 2 years. Granted you don’t have to be a life science major to be pre-dent, the required courses overlap with life science majors for the most part…you should check out assist.org and look at what classes you are going to have to take.

I’m a Biology major at IVC. Even though I didn’t TAP or take any honors classes, I still got into UCLA. On the other hand, my friends who took honors Calculus and Psychology told me it’s basically the same as regular classes. If you’ve ever taken AP classes or honors classes in high school you should do fine. In my opinion, CC was way easier than AP classes.

Physics major (accepted into UCLA) that took 1 class at OCC. Mostly went to GWC.
i took the regular math 285 at OCC which apparently is harder than the math 285 honors. honors isnt necessarily always harder

Got accepted to UCLA and i attend OCC, saddleback and IVC. Don’t go the TAP route, trust me. It’s not worth it, plus the honors classes at IVC and OCC are hard and in bs classes that probably are not major pre-reqs. It will be tough to get those honors units completed and transfer in 2 years.
