Just wondering...because my community college canceled Statistics for this semester, and the other maths are like "college algebra" which seems way to low level. I could probably take some type of math next semester, but would it REALLY decrease my chances to try to apply as a transfer with no math credits? (I would be applying after my freshman year, so only two semesters of college) <---Actually brings up another question. Do freshman have a MUCH lower acceptance rate? Everyone seems to be transferring after 2 yrs instead of 1...but I can't spend 2 yrs here, they barely have enough for me to take one year.

No calc.? No trig.?

Which Community College is this? Check to see if its even accredited for Pete's sake.

It's very, very, very hard to transfer without math. If you completed calc in high school, you'll be fine. If you haven't, you'll find yourself in a pickle.

is there another nearby community college you could take it???

Yes, they are accredited. And...they (thankfully) are affiliated with another college, (you take classes at both, and they all go on one transcript) that DOES have Calc. Problem is..I can't take it until next senester.

Will it be hard to transfer with only one semester of Calculus? I don't know what else to do? Should I just take college algebra to have SOMETHING!?

Why can't you take it until next semester. The classes are closed? Make a fuss about it and they have to let you in. Say the schools you want to transfer to will consider you greatly if you have 2 calcs opposed to one.

I can't take it until next semester because they canceled it for this semester. It's a bad community college...no one there is taking any high level classes but me..there are only a few of us in Chemistry, and the high level maths were canceled due to lack of intrest.

Scratch the entire school stuff.

Sue the school for being retarded.

Cha-ching.

But in all seriousness, sue the school.

To put all jokes aside, just go to a different school.

What do you plan for a major, soccer_guy? Have you already posted your college course schedule somewhere? If not, can you post it here?

Planned Major: Biology

Community College - Semester 1 (Current)

General Chemistry (3 Credits)
Gen Chemistry Lab (1 Credit)
General Biology (3 Credits)
General Biology Lab (1 Credit)
English Composition I (3 Credits)
Art History (3 Credits)
American Gov. and Economy (3 Credits)

Total: 17 credits

Community College - Semester 2 (Next semester - Planned)

Principles of Sociology (3 credits)
Gen Chem II (3 credits)
Gen Chem II lab (1 credit)
Gen Biol II (3 Credits)
Gen Biol II Lab (1 Credit)
English Composition II (3 Credits)
Calculus I ( 3 Credits)
Physics (3 credits)
Physics lab (1 credit)

Total: 21 credits

As you can see, I'm trying to finish the GE requirements. Physics depends...it may or may not be offered next semester. (They assured me algebra based physics would be available, but I don't know if that would look good. Calculus based physics depends on the intrest. Does anyone know if algebra based physics for sure would NOT look good?)

What kind of community college has calculus only listed as 3 semester units? Are you sure this is real calculus or one of those micky mouse "calculus for life science majors"?

Oh, it's Calculus for 3 credits, and then it has a "Calculus lab" worth 1 credit, so it does total 4.

Soccerguy,
That is one hell of a cirriculum. Good luck with it.

Thanks! Just, not sure about Physics since it's Algebra based, and now I'm not sure about UNC all together because I had 3.5 math credits in HS (long story) and so I think I have to meet the college requirements then..which I do except 6 credits of foregin language and 6 credits of math, unless you can mix and match cause I did have 2 HS foreign language. I'm just not sure if it means I have to have either ALL the HS requirements, or ALL of the college requirements, or if I can mix and match. Like, since I don't have 4 maths, take my 6 credits of math in college, but for Foreign language my 2 in HS count, so I don't need 6 in college. Bleh..

soccer_guy - you have important questions here. I think the way to go is to check the recommended freshman curriculum at the school where you want to transfer (or, if several, check the one witht he strictest requirements). See how far off you are - in particular check whether calculus needs to happen in year 1 (2 semesters) and whether calculus-based physics is required for bio majors (it certainly is for some science majors).

Once you find that out, I'd contact the transfer admissions office at that school with any questions that remain, or come back here with any specific issues.

Best of luck. You are on the right track.

If you take it in the Spring semester, you'll be fine. I thought you meant not at all.

Definitely attempt to take stats for this semester, if possible!

So it's ok to just take Calculus I and not II for this year? It will look ok?

I mean Calc II would be amazing compared to Calc 1 by itself. I say enroll at a different CC just for Calc 1.

Drop art history for semester 1, and drop one of your science classes for Semester 2 as well. It's best, imo, to show that you have a knack for something opposed to a wide variety of things.

Oh...I really love science, and Chem I and II and Biology I and II are required for my major. Also...I REALLY love the art history class. lol You're telling me to drop my favorite classes. You sure that's the best thing...?

If nothing else, College Algebra can clear the Math requirement for IGETC. If your a math major, you will need more.

Will it look bad though?
