Has NM/NA Finalist already been decided?

Yesterday, I received an email from Christopher Watson, Dean of Undergraduate Admission at Northwestern saying the school would waive my application fee since I am, as they say, a National Achievement Finalist. While this was great news for making my sister and her friends at NU jealous, it confuses me a bit.

I thought we were notified of finalist status in February. Do colleges already know?

Also, my PSAT score was such that I am both a National Merit and National Achievement Semi Finalist. I think I remember my counselor saying something about having to choose between being NMF or NAF. Since Northwestern is telling me that I am NAF, does that mean I'm not NMF?

Thanks.

If you are both then you can probably choose which one will give you a better scholarship. Make sure you look at the thread by Keilexandra in the Financial Aid Forum about National Merit Scholarships. There are a bunch of good deals out there.
