Has test optional been a boon for Bing, and what other trends have you seen at the school?

I read this excellent article, courtesy of @mynameiswhatever

There have been many discussions on CC about test optional college admissions, but that’s not the purpose of this thread.

One of the nation’s top high schools is featured in the article, Stuyvesant High. The article indicated that more students are submitting more apps, and while many top students at Stuyvesant are still getting into top colleges, other students who might have gained admission to schools the next tier down are finding that even those are becoming more difficult admits. This leads to the quote below…

“Normally…about 50 to 75 graduates enroll at Binghamton University, one of the state’s top public universities but a safety school among many Stuy students. This fall, 124 students went there.”

My son is a senior at Bing. He is very happy there. It could be that maybe kids at the university are spreading the word. Or it could be that kids are settling for their safety school. Or it could be an influx of out of state students. When we dropped him off as a freshman, I said that he could mark my words, there would be a big increase in OOS students at Bing. Anecdotally, I see more posts from OOS parents on the Bing social media pages and he agrees that there seems to be more OOS kids.

I see these developments as positive for the school and helpful in improving its profile. How many of you have noticed more kids applying to Bing, or maybe choosing Bing over other options? Anything else worth noting?

I may have given enough info about me and my kids that I could be outed on this site by now, but I will add my person experience to this. I went to Townsend Harris and then Bing back in the day. There were at least 15 kids from our tiny graduating class there and many from Stuy, Bronx Science, etc. It was always a popular place for kids who went to the highly rejective NYC public high schools who had bubble incomes, too much for aid, too little for full pay and was an excellent education. Now we live in suburban NJ and it is amazing how many kids from our highly ranked suburban public school go there.

Yes, quite a few NJ kids at Bing, which I don’t think is new. Definitely more kids from the mid Atlantic, but surprisingly, there are west coast kids too. There’s an out of state parents page and there are students from CA and OR. Binghamton’s tiny little regional airport offers flights to Detroit and Orlando and Syracuse seems to have more flights these days too, but of course, it draws from a number of colleges.
